Description

PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905.
R. BAGHIA.
RULER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 7.1905.
IN KEN 70/? fi aerzBacha WITNESSES $5 ATTORNEYS PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT BAOHIA, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
RULER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
I Application filed September 7,1905. Serial No. 277,346.
To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BACHIA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rulers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ruling devices such as are usually employed by bookkeepers and others who are under the necessity of ruling ledgers and other books of accounts; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class having means whereby an ordinary blotter may be conveniently attached thereto and held in position for immediate use; and. with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which" Figure 1 is a plan view of an ordinary ruler made according to my invention; Fig 2, a back view thereof; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a modification; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, I provide an ordinary ruler a, which is composed of wood, and the front edge of which is beveled, as shown at a and provided with the usual scale a and to the back of this ruler I secure springtongues 1), three .of which are shown, and these spring-tongues project toward the edge a and the back ends thereof are preferably countersunk in the back of the ruler, as shown at 5 The spring-tongues b are intended to hold a blotter 0, one edge of which is in practice inserted beneath the springtongues b or between said springs and the body of the ruler, and I also preferably provide the left-hand end of the ruler a. with a handle 01, by means of which the ruler may be conveniently manipulated by the left hand, while the right is employed in writing in the usual manner.
It will be understood that the back edge a of the ruler is employed in ruling a page or Sheet of paper in the usual manner, and by having the blotter 0 connected with the ruler in the manner described the said blotter may be moved to any desired point by simply moving the ruler and the blotter is also in position ready for use.
In the modification shown in Fi s. 3 and 5 I provide a ruler e, composed of s eet metal and the back edge of which is beveled or rounded, as shown at e and adapted to serve for ruling purposes, while the front edge thereof may be provided with a scale in the usual manner, if desired; but it will be understood that the scale is not a feature of this invention and may or may not .be employed.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 3 and 5 the back of the body of the ruler is provided with spring tongues 6 three of which are shown, and these three tongues are cut from the body of the ruler and are depressed or bent backwardly, as shown in Fig.
5, and the blotters c is inserted in practice between said sprin -tongues and the body of the ruler, as clear y shown in said figures, and the operation will be the same as with the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
Although the ruler shown in Figs. 3 and 5 is not provided with a handle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, it will be apparent that a similar handle may be applied to the ruler shown in Figs. 3 and 5, if desired.
A ruler made in this manner may be used wherever rulers and blotters are desired, and it will be understood that the blotter may be detached whenever necessary or applied to the ruler whenever required for use.
It will be observed that the spring-tongues b and e do not project entirely across the rulers a and e, and this is the form of construction preferred, as said spring-tongues do not in this case interfere with the use of a scale if a scale be applied to the front edge of a ruler.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A ruler, the back of which is provided with a plurality of transversely arranged spring-tongues connected therewith adjacent to the back edge of the ruler and the free ends of which project in the direction of the front edge of the ruler, substantially as shown and described.
2. A ruler having parallel front and back sides, and spring-tongues connected with the back side thereof adjacent to the back edge thereof and having free ends which project Q semis transversely of the back side thereof and in In testimony that I claim the foregoing as to the direction of the front edge thereof, submy invention 1 have signed my name, in stantially as shown and described. presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 3. Ad ruler IEJIOVIldGi with a hiandle which is 6th day of September, 1905. 5 secure to t e to t ereof a -aoent to one end thereof, the bgck of the ruler being also ROBERT BAOHIA provided with a plurality of spring-tongues Witnesses: which project toward the front edge of the F. A. STEWART, ruler, substantially as shown and described. 0. E. MULREANY.
