PATENT OFFICE? ANTON C. EGGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. ASSIGNQR TO GOODYEARS INDIA RUBBER GLOVE MANUFACTURING CO., OF NAUGATUCK, CONNECTICUT, AND NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BED-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,103, dated January 19, 1904:.
Application filed May 16, 1903. Serial No. 157,424. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON C. Ecenns, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
Rubber bed-pans heretofore in the market were made of an inflated, elongated, or round IO part, which was connected at the lower part by a rubber web. These rubber bed-pans were objectionable for the reason that they could not be cleaned properly, as the antiseptic cleaning fluid could not wash out the corners formed between the inflated ring and the bottom. My improved bed-pan overcomes the objections referred to, inasmuch as it permits the inverting of the bottom, so that the same can be readily washed and cleaned in all its parts, whereby the smell and sediments can be removed and a bed-pan of great convenience and high hygienic properties obtained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 2 5 represents a perspective view of my improved bed-pan. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, showing the bottom in normal position. Fig. 3 is a similar vertical transverse section showing the bottom in inverted position for cleaning. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a modification of my improved bed-pan; Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the modified form shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a similar vertical trans- 3 5 verse section of Fig. 4, showing the bottom in inverted position for cleaning.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the 4 elongated ring-shaped bulb, and B the bottom of my improved bed-pan. The elongated ring 'or bulb A is provided with a tube t, having a valved mouthpiece m at the end for inflating the bulb to the required size for use. The
bottom B in Figs. 2 and 3 is connected with v the inner circumference of the ring A at about the median line of the same by an intermediate web C of inwardly-flaring shape, that is vulcanized to the edge of the bottom B and to the ring A, so as to form a tight seam. The 5 flexible connecting-piece C permits the inverting of the bottom B through the interior of the inflated ring or bulb A from the normal position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that the meeting edges of the bottom and connecting-piece C can be thoroughly and conveniently cleaned from all sediment by being Washed with a suitable cleaning fluid. After cleaning the bottom may be returned into its normal position, as shown in Fig. 2, or may be used, as shown in Fig. 3, by simply inverting the inflated bulb A. Instead of connecting the bottom B by the connecting-piece C to the inner part of the ring A, as shown in Fig. 2, the connecting- 5 piece may be connected to the outer part of the ring A, as shown in Fig. 5. The bottom B and connecting part C form then, preferably, one piece D. Thus when the bed-pan is used as shown in Fig. 5 the upper side d 7 of the bottom D is in contact with the liquid,
while after the liquid has been emptied and for cleaning purposes the side d may be easily and thoroughly cleaned after the ring-shaped bulb A has been turned inside out and the web or bottom D passed through the ring or bulb, as shown in Fig. 6. By simply inverting the ring-shaped bulb A (shown in Fig. 6)
it is ready for use, in which case theside d is in contact with the liquid. 1
My improved bed-pan has the advantage that it can be thoroughly cleaned by the washing fluid in all its parts, both inside and out,
so that any sediment or odor is removed and a perfectly clean, sweet, and sanitary bed-pan 8 5 is obtained. The reversibility of the bed-panofiers also many advantages.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rubber bed-pan, consisting of an in- 9 or bulb, means for inflating the same, a bottom Web, and an intermediate Web connecting the circumference of the rlng or bulb with the bottom Web so as to permit the inverting of the bottom through the opening of the ring or bulb to the opposite side of the same for permitting the thorough cleaning of the pan portion proper, substantially as set forth.
3. A rubber bed-pan, consisting of an inflated ring or bulb, and a bottom Web connected with the ring or bulb at the periphery of IO the bed-pan, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
ANTON C. EGGERS.
