To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, ELI VUNGANNON, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Roseville, in the county of Logan and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bale-ties; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which is stamped from asingle piece of metal and is adapted to hold the ends of a band after the same has been placed about a bale.

A further object is to provide a bale-tie which can be readily placed in position and secured during the baling operation.

l/Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists of a tie formed of a single blank and comprising parallel arms, upon the free end of one of which is formed a hold ing-strap having ears adapted to overlap the arms and prevent spreading.

The'invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed,

and illustrated in the accompanying d rawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved bale-tie connected to the ends of a band. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the tie is formed.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 and 2 are similar parallel arms eX- tending from the ends of an intermediate portion 3, and formed at the free end of the arm 1 is a strap 4, which extends laterally from said arm and is equal in length to the distance between the outer edges of the arms 1 and 2. Ears 5 and 6 are formed at the ends of the strap 4.

The bands 7 used in the baling operation are provided with loops 8 and 9 at the ends thereof, and one of these loops 9 is formed about the arm 1 prior to the baling operation. When it is desired to secure the band about the bale, the arm 2 is inserted through the loop 8 and the strap 4 is bent upward, so as to 5 overlap the two arms 1 and 2. Ears 5 and 6 are then bent inwardly over the outer edges of said arm, and the parts are thus securely held together. It will be seen that the tie can be readily stamped from a single sheet of metal and can be quickly applied, and after such application it will securely hold the ends of the band together and prevent spreading thereof. As the tie is constructed of sheet metal, a substantially flat connection is produced. The retaining-ears 5 and 6 bond inwardly toward the bale, and therefore are prevented from being accidentally released from engagement with the arms by articles contacting therewith.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but 1 do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A bale-tie struck from a single sheet of metal and comprising parallel arms connected at one end, a laterally-extending strap integral with one of the arms, and cars at the ends of the strap.

2. A bale-tie formed in a single sheet of metal and comprising similar arms connected at one end, a laterally-extending strap integral with the other end of one of the arms and adapted to overlap both arms, and retaining cars at the ends of the strap.

3. A bale-tie formed of a single sheet of metal and comprising similar parallel arms connected at one end, a strap integral with the other end of one of the arms and extending laterally therefrom and adapted to overlap both arms, and retaining-ears at the ends of the straps for engaging the outer ends of the arms.
