Description
W. D. FIE LD.
CotiomBale Ties.
Patented June 17, 1873.
WITNESSES.
AM. Pno/mrmas/mPH/c ca. MK (o'ssunus pnacass) UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM I). FIELD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,024, dated J une 17, 1873; application filed May 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. FIELD, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OottOn Iies; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 7
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved cotton-tie. Figs. 3 and 5 are modifications thereof. Figs. 2, 4, and 6 are side views of the ties shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5, respectively.
In the accompanying drawings, AA, Fig. 1, represent two hooks, counterparts of each other, which are jointed together by a pivotpin, a. When the two hooks are in the proper relation to hold fast the iron hoops for strapping the cotton-bale, the figure which they represent is shown in the full lines of the drawing, and presents a rectangular central opening, B. One end of the hoop-strap O. is bent over the joint, and the other end of the hoop-strap C is bent around the members D of the hooks A A; the upwardly-projecting points 1) bearing against the edges of the hoopstraps, whereby the two members of the cotton-tie are prevented from opening.
To apply the fastening one of the members can be placed in relation to the other, as shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 exhibits two hooks of substantially the same character as those shown at Fig. 1, but they are pivoted to a slotted link-piece, E. One end of the hoop-strap is inserted through the slot in the link-piece, and the other end is secured by the hook-pieces A A, as in the former case.
The tie shown in Fig. 5 difi'ers only from the one shown in Fig. 3 in the fact that a single hook-piece is employed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bale-tie composed of two hook-pieces, A A, pivoted together and arranged relatively to each other, substantially as described.
2. A bale-tie composed of the hook-piece A pivoted to a slotted link-piece, E, substantially as described.
