SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,289, dated April 26, 1904. Application filed September 10,1903- Serial No. 172,665. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VVILHELMINA WITTIG? SCHLAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hat-pins, and particularly relates to a novel construction whereby a number of hat-pins may be connected and disconnected for use combined or singly.

Some of the objects of this invention are to provide a construction whereby any number of hat-pins may be connected to form one device which is much easier to place in position for holding the hat and to remove and whereby the pins may be detached from the com.- bined structure and used singly when so desired."

I have illustrated one form of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a view of my combined structure, showing three pins. of the heads of two pins broken away to disclose the connecting means, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the head of one pin broken away and an ornament about to be inserted.

Referring to the drawings, I provide each pin A with a cross bar or member B, which may be either ornamented or a plain bar, as shown, and serves as a head for the pin. I also construct the cross-bars B in such a manner that they may be joined end to end, so that the pins A will lie parallel to one another. I have shown all the cross-bars constructed with a male thread at one end and a female thread at the other end, except the central one in Fig. 1, which is shown with two female threads. It will be noted that when a central pin is provided with two female threads and the remainder are provided with a male thread at one end and a female thread at the other end the terminations of the left-hand and right-hand series of pins will be with female threads.

I may provide an ornament C, fixed on the central pin, and ornaments D, having male threads to engage the female threads at the terminations of the left and right hand, series 5 and produce a more finished article.

Fig. 2 is a detail It is obvious that I may employ other means of connection between the heads of the pins so long as the pins are brought parallel with-- out departing from the spirit of mv invention. It is also obvious that I may dispense with the said ornaments and may alter the confor mation of the heads without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim isv 1. A hat-pin having a head rigid therewith and provided with couplers rigid with said head and projected laterally therefrom.

2. A hat-pin having oppositely-disposed, laterally-projecting couplers, one of which is male and the other female.

3. The combinationof a plurality of hat pins, each having oppositely-disposed, laterally-projecting couplers one of which is male and the other female, the one coupler of one of said pins being arranged to engage the mating coupler of the next to eifect a combined structure comprising a number of separable pins extending alongside each other.

4. A hat-pin having a laterally-projecting head provided at its projecting endwith a screw-thread.

5. A hat-pin having an elongated transverse head provided at its ends with screw-threads.

6. A hat-pin having oppositely-disposed laterally-projecting couplers, one of said couplers being provided with a male thread and the other of said couplers being provided with a female thread.

v'T. A pin provided with a transverse head rigid therewith, the ends of the said head being formed as couplers.

8. A pin having a transverse head rigid therewith, and provided at the ends of said head with couplers one of which is male and the other female.

9. The combination of plurality of hat-pins each having oppositely-disposed laterally -pro jecting complementary couplers, the one coupler of one of said pins arranged to engage the complementary coupler of the next to eflect a combined structure comprising a number of separated pins lying parallel to one another and end pieces having one coupler only adapted to engage the free couplers at the ends of the series. 4

10. A series of hat-pins comprising one pin provided with oppositely-disposed laterallyprojecting non-complementary couplers, and a plurality of pins provided with oppositely- 5 disposed laterally-projecting complementary couplers, one of said complementary couplers adapted to engage with the said couplers on said first pin.

11. The combination of a pin provided with I O oppositely-disposed laterally-directed femalethreaded couplers, a plurality of pins provided with oppositely disposed laterally directed" male and female threaded couplers, the male couplers of said plurality of pins adapted to engage said couplers of said first pin and also I5 the female couplers of said plurality of pins, and end pieces having male-threaded couplers adapted to engage said female couplers.
