UNITED STATES Patented June 2,1903.
PATENT, OFFICE.
SAFETY-,SNAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,075, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed June 2, 1902- Serial No. 109,898. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it remembered that I, CHARLES P. AL- LISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Snapsfor Harness; and I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in harness-snaps, the object being to produce a snap which may not be easily unfastened except when desired. This I ac complish by the use of a plunger situated in the body of the snap andadapted to engage with the hook or beak and which is operated from the rear by a button which is attached to the rear end of th'eplunger, which plunger is governed in its action by a spiral spring within the snap, and such other devices and combination of devices as will he more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings for abetter understanding thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved harness-snap, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same through line X X,
Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a plan of the loop or head and a portion of the body of my improved harness-snap, showing the plunger elevated.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts of the several Views.
1 represents the body of the snap, which is of the usual shape.
2 is the hook or beak, and 3 is the loop or eye by which the snap is permanently attached to the rope or chain. v
3 is a bore extending the full length of the body 'i. e., from the mouth of the hook to the loop or eye'-and having its portion adjacent to the latter reduced in diameter.
4 designates the'plunger, extending the entire length of the body of the snap in the bore thereof and reduced in size at its rear end.
A spring 5 surrounds the reduced portion of the plunger 4, so as to engage the same endwise, thereby pressing the same in engagement with the hook or beak 2. A button 6, by which the plunger t is operated, is rigidly attached to the rear end of the said plunger the point of contact of the button 6 upon the body 1 is a slot 8, within which the button 6 is at rest when in position for service.
In order that the hand of the operator may more easily grasp the button 6 when it is desired to unfasten the snap, I provide depressions 9 at right angles to the slot 8 upon the body 1.
The spring 5 yields to the withdrawal of the front end of the plunger 4 when it is desired to connect or disconnect the hook or beak 2 and when released forces the plunger back into its normal position, when the operator releases the button 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a snap-hook, of a body having a hook proper or beak at one end, and a loop or eye at its other end, and also. having a longitudinal bore extending from the mouth of the hook proper to the loop or eye, a plunger movable in said bore of the body, and normally extending from the loop or eye to the end of the beak or hook proper so as to close the mouth of the latter, and
having a button on its rear end arranged in having exterior lugs 7 arranged adjacent to the loop or eye, and depressions 9 at the ends of the slot 8, a plunger movable in the bore of the body and normally extending from the loop or eye to the end of the beak o1- hook proper so as to close the mouth of the latter, and having a button normally occupying the slot 8 in the loop or eye, and a coiled spring surrounding the plunger in the bore, and interposed between an abutment on the plungel and an abutment of the body, disposed [0 in rear of the first-mentioned abutment.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
