THILL-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. f7 58,160, dated April 26, 1904. Appunti-n filed February 27, 1904..; Serial No. 195,622. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, OULLENDWHITE, acitis.
` zen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Obion and State of Ten-v nessee, have invented a new and useful Thill- Support, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to devices for attachment to vehicles for supporting the shafts or thills in an elevated position when not in use, and has for its object to provide 'a simply-constructed and inexpensive device of this chary acter attachable to any style or form of bu gg Y,
carriage, or similar vehicle and byv means of which the thills may be supported in an elevated posi-tion and quickly released when re-` quired.
With these and other objects in view,which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corre# tages, and the right is therefore reserved of making all the changes and modifications which fairly fall within the scope of the invention and the claims madel therefor.
In the accompanying drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of thel improved device applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the rear of the improved device detached and enlarged.
The improved device may be attached to any fsuitable portion of the forward runninggear to bring it in proper position relative to the thills or shafts and for the purpose of illustration is shown attached to the upper spring bar or bolster 10, which will preferably be selected when the construction of the vehicle running-gear permits of it.
The improved device consists of a bracket4 Vbolster-plate or other suitable portion of the vehicle, and this portion of the device, it is obvious, may be varied to adapt it to different classes and forms of vehicles without in any manner affecting the principle of the invention, which is not necessarily dependent upon any particular means for attaching it to the vehicle. A stop-bar 17 is pivoted at 18 to the bracket for swinging into engagement alternately with the stop-arms 11 13 and'lateral stops 12 14 andlimited in its movement in one direction by the guard member 15.
The device will be so positioned relative to the thills (represented at 19) that when elevated it will extend in front of some portion of the same and maintain them in an elevated position and when depressed into engagement with the arm 13 and its stop 14 will release the thills and permit them to be lowered into operative position.
Check-springs 2O 21 will -be attached, respectively, to the vertical member 11 and lateral stop 14 to bear upon the bar 17 and main- `tain it yieldably'in either one of its two posif tions and prevent accidental displacement of the bar..
By this simplefmeans `it is obvious that a Vvery effective and convenient device is produced applicable to any style or form of buggy or similar vehicle and by means of which the thills may be securely supported when not in use.
The guard member 15 is an important feature of the invention, as it aords a firm support to the members 11 and 13 and also firmly supports the bar 17 at all 'points in its travel and relieves the pivot 18 very largely from strains. ,Y
The parts 11 and 13, together with the main lateral stop, and a stop-bar pivoted to said bracket and swinging across the path of the thills when elevated and supported alternately in its elevated and depressed positions by said arms and their lateral stops.

A device of the class described, consisting of a bracket for detachable connection to the running-gear of a vehicle and having a vertical arm and a horizontal arm each with a lateral stop, a stop-.bar pivoted to said bracket and swinging across the path ofthe thills when -elevated and supported alternately in its elevated and depressed positions by said arms and their lateral stops, and check springs connected to said stop-arms to yieldabl57 maintain said stop-.bar in its two positions.
