TONGUE SUPPORT. No. 401,461. Patented Apr. 16, 1889.

TONGUE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,461, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed February 12, 1889' Serial No. 299,574. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNUM RENTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaco, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tongue-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ton guesupports for vehicles; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tonguesupport, showing the same applied to the tongue of a wagon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same.
A represents a pair of coiled springs, which are provided each with arms B 0, arranged at rightangles to each other, as shown. The vertical arms B are provided attheir upper ends with eyes D. The arms 0 are secured on opposite sides of the heel or rear end of the tongue, as shown in Fig. 1, and the eyes I) of the arms B are engaged by eyebolts E, the latter extending through the sand-board F, and having nuts or burrs G screwed to their rear ends, to clamp them firmly to the said board. By this arrangement the arms 13 C are held normally by the springs A in a position at right angles to each other, and they thereby serve to normally maintain the tongue in a horizontal position, and yet allow the same to move 'up or downward when required.
My improved tongue-supportis particularly adapted for use in dump-wagons in elevators, is not likely to get out of order, and is very strong and durable. It will be readily understood thatthe tongue-support may be detached from the wagon in a very few moments when desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the springs A, having the arms B 0, arranged at right angles to each other, said arms 0 being secured on the tongue, with the bolts E, secured to the sandboard and attached to the upper ends of arms B, substantially as described.
. 2. The tongue support, comprising the coiled springs A, having the arms B C, arranged at right angles to each other, and the eyebolts E, connected to the upper ends of arms B and adapted to be secured to the sand-looard, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BARNUM RENTZ.
