Be it known that I, CHARLES OHEsnBRoUeH WOODS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton,Pennsylvania,have invented cer tain new and useful improvements in Covers for Packing Vessels, of whichvthe following is a specification.

My invention relates to packing vessels, and particularlyv to means for closing the discharge-openings of said vessels.

4The inventionl consists of the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described,and particularly pointed out in the claim.

ln vthe accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan View of the head of a packing vessel with my improvement attached, and Fig. @is a central vertical section through the head with my invention applied thereto.

My invention relates more particularly to the style of cover known as pri/edf7 and, as shown in the drawings, it consists of a capor cover l, havingl a depending flange 2, adapted to tightly lit a flange 3, extending upwardly from the head Il of the packing vessel. The flange of the cover at its lower edge is turned upwardly, forming a rounded head 5., and the edge of this is extended upwardly and laterall y and thence downwardly, forming a curved rim or flange 6. The ed ge'of this curved flange, as shown in Fig. 2, is located a slight distance above the upper surface of the head of the package, and vthe space thus provided is sufficient for the introduction of a suitable instrument beneath the cap or cover may be pried oil", the said instru` ment finding' a fulemmi-bearing upon the upper edge 7 of the head of the package. Tt will be noticed that the pry-oii` flange is of special form and not only serves to afford bearing surrounding an opening,

flange by which the for the instrument to Work against, but it stiifens the cap or covering and serves to maintain its shape. The rounded bead fits closely against the upper surface of the head and serves to make a tight closure, and in this respect it augments the closure formed by the contacting surfaces of the depending flange on the cover and the upwardly-extending flange on the head.- This curved lower portion' of the cover also facilitates the ready adjust ment of the cover lto the flange of the head, and

it facilitates also the seating of the cap upon the flange and head. l do not wish to limit myself, however, to the precise relative arrangement of the cover and head.

lt will be understood that l do not limit myself to any particular form of packing vessel,- as this may be oblong, square, or ther shape;4

nor do T limit myself to a cover having a ange extending continuously all around the same, as it will be obvious that a section of the ange may be used, if desired. 4

I claim as my inventionln combination with a head forl a packing vessel having an upwardly-extending flange a cap or cover having a depending flange to fit around the flange of the head, the said cap-flange being turned upwardly at its lower edge forming a rounded bead or lower edgethe said ange thence being hent outwardly and downwardly forming a concave rim surrounding the lower part of the said cap-flange, substantially as described.
