IMPROVEMENT IN Rennens.

'ro -ALL WHOM4 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. MURRAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a ln'cWand imp'ioved.l Device for'Operating the Rudders of Vessels; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a fulland ex'act specification of the same, wherein I llave set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with suchparts as I claim, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent. I
This-invention consists in constructing the rudder of two pieces, the lower part forming the blade, being somewhat similar to the lower part of the rudder now in use, but the upper portion or post is entirely-dissimilar, being constructed independently of the blade, andV is composed of a shaft of iron orother metal, bent in the form of a crank, and is connected with the blade atits outer edge instead of the inner.
The objects of the invention are to control the blade of the rudder at apoint situated at its outer edge, or at 'the circumference of the circle, instead of at the centre; to prevent the bending and twisting off of the post, which is so frequent an occurrence with the ordinary rudpders now in use; to keep the metal post free `from immersion in water, by placing the saine entirely above the waterline. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- 'Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, applied to a vessel, partly in section.
Figure l is a'plane view of the post or shaft, showing its connection with the blade and stern-post.
A representsI the post or shaft, bent in the form of a crank, and is composed of ironeor other metal. vB4
is a metal band or strap, holding the post A in position. In the latter there is turned a. recess or groove, into which the band ts, thereby preventing the post from rising or falling. C is the blade of the rudder, which is of wood orirOn, as may be the case with the vessel. D is the stern-post, on which the band B is rmly bolted, and the blade C hung. E is a. vertical pin, firmly secured to the outer edgevof the bladeC, and fitting into a. corresponding hole made in the outer extremity of the post A. The pin E should be jacketed with rubber.1 to
`relieve in a `tneasLue the sudden strain on it and the post, caused by heavy seas striking the blade, as well as to prevent the constant rattle that would ensue, should the metal pin and post be directly in contact.
By theiise of this device, it is believed that the frequent loss of and damage to vessels, occasioned by the twisting oit" of the rudder-posts no w used, will be prevented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- '.lhe shaft A, formed with a crank u pon its lower end, when used in combination with the rudder-blade C,
to which it is connected at its outer edge by means of a pin or pivot, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. A
THOMAS W. MURRAY.
