Description
@uitrit tatrs atwt @ffice THOMAS W.; MURRAY, or NRW YORK, N. Y.
Letters .Patent No. 67,066, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVED RUDDER.
Gille .Srlgrhule rifarsi tu im iigisr iritcrs grtuit :uit lurking @met nf tigt samt T() ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, THOMAS W. MURRAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Rudder; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompany-ing drawings, hereinafter referred to, form-s a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may-be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as .I claim and desire to have secured by Letters Patent. I l
This invention consists in constructing therudder with a cast-iron post, and securing the blade of the rudder, which is of wood, to the post in a novel way, and also in a novel way of securing the rudder-post to the stern-post of the vessel. f
The object of the invention is twofold, to wit, to prevent the unshipping of the rudder, and to obviate the contingency of the bending and twisting oil' of the rudder-post. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention applied to a vessel,- partly in section.
Figure 2, a detached horizontal section of the sume, taken in the line :c xtig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the rudder-post, ofcast iron, oficylind'rical form, and having a longitudinal V-.shaped ilange or projection, a, cast with`it. The post is cast hollow, to insure lightness with strength, and the ange or projection slightly increases in' width from its upper t its lower end, as shown by the dotted line in iig. 1. On the upper part of the post A there is rmly secured a collar, b; which .rests on a metallic plate, c, attached to the deck of thc vessel, and supports theirudder or sustains its weight, as will be fully understood by referring Vto tig. 1. B is the blade ofthe rudder, which is of wood, and is grooved at its inner edge to receive the flange or projection a of the post and a portion of the cylindrical part of the post. The outer edge .of the blade has a, metal bar or strap, d, attached to it, and the blade is securedto the post by metal straps e e, which pass around the post A and fit in grooves or recesses made cireumferentially therein, the straps being bolted to the blade, as shown at f. By this means the blade is firmly secured to the post, being effectually prevented from twisting off therefrom by the flange or projection a, while the straps e e prevent its bodily detachment therefrom. The rudder-post A is partially fitted in a concave in the stern-post (Land is secured to the same bymetal strapsg g, which are attached to the stern-post by bolts h, and are fitted in and pass around recesses z' in the Post, said recesses being suiiiciently long to admit of a certain degree of vertical play of the post, (see iig. 1.) The recesses, z' are turned perfectly cylindrical, in order to admit of the free turning of the post in the straps g. The rudder post should be galvanized, in order to prevent oxidation. In case the lowerY end of the rudder should strike the ground or bottom, the long recesses admit of it rising freely without the possibility of its becoming detached or unshipped, while the iron rudder-post cannot be twisted oil` 'or bent, as is the case very frequently with the ordinary Wooden rudder-posts, nor can it be eaten by worms.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rudder for vessels, provided with a cast-iron post, LA, having a flange or projection, d, fitted into a wooden blade, B, which is secured to the post by metal strips 'c e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The rudder-post A, when secured tothe stern-posts C by means of the metal straps g in the recesses t', in such mann-er that said posts are allowed vertical play without unshipping or becoming detached, as herein shown and described. I
THOMAS' W. MURRAY.
