Description

NO. rsaea UNITED STATES Patented. March Q9, 1 904.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN MUNSON AND ARTHUR Sr DORNBLASER, OF HAGERSTOWN,
MARYLAND.
CARPET-WINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,132, dated March 29, 1904.
I Application filed April 7, 1903. Serial No. 151,513. (No model.) 7
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALVIN W. MUNSON and ARTHUR S. DORNBLASER, citizens of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Winders, of which vthe following is a specification.
The object of our said invention is to provide an implement whereby rolls of carpet and such like fabric may be tightened without unrolling the same, whereby the stock may be kept in good condition more conveniently, all as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the implement embodying our said invention with the central portion of the handle broken away to show the construction more in detail, and Fig. 2 an elevation of the same.
Said implement consists of a handle A of suitable length and of a form such as shown or any other which will be suitable for turning the tool. It may be formed of wood or metal, as preferred. On each side of its center is formed a transverse perforation which extends at a slight angle toward the other from the back to the front of said handle. Two steel bars a are mounted in said perforations and are of sufficient length so that their adjacent sides bear against each other near their outer ends with considerable force by reason of the angle at which they approach each other. Their lower points are preferably somewhat tapered on the adjacent sides to facilitate the insertion of a web of carpet be-' tween them. Said steel bars are of suflicient strength and rigidity for the purpose and are secured in the perforations in said handle A by means of screws or pins a or in any preferred manner.
In operation, it being desired to tighten a roll of carpet, said implement is inserted in the center thereof, the end of the web being placed between the spring-bars a, said bars being then slid down into the center of the I Y iently kept in a perfect condition.
Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An implement for tightening rolls of fabric consisting of a handle for turning and spring-bars extending at 'an angle toward each other therefrom, with their outer ends bearing againsteach other, substantially as set forth.
2. An implement for winding rolls of carpet, &c., comprising a turning-handle having adjacent perforations, and transverse clamping-jaws mounted in said perforations and inclined toward each other, whereby their outer ends will be sprung apart by the insertion of the web of the fabric and said fabric thusclamped between said jaws, substantially as set forth.
3. An implement for winding rolls of carpet, 860., comprising a handle having transverse perforations near its center which extend through said handle at an angle, springbars mounted in said perforations to bear against each other at their outer ends, said outer ends being tapered outwardly on the adjacent faces, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals, at Hagerstown, Maryland, this 27th day of March, A. D. 1903.
