ICE-PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 191%.
App1ication filed April 11, 1914. Serial No. 831,214.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WINBURN Frsnnunnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Picks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ice picks especially designed for use around drug stores, saloons, or wherever it is necessary to chip large quantities of ice for packing or similar purposes, and the invention relates particularly to picks with removable points, whereby any one or more points may be very easily removed independent of all of the others and replaced after being sharpened, or another one substituted for it should any one or more of the points become dulled, broken, rusty, or otherwise unfit for service.
The invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of device of this character, the parts of which are so arranged that any one without the use of special tools and in a very eXpeditious manner and with little trouble as, for example, by removing a single screw, can separate the two sections of the combined head and handle portion of the tool and remove any of the pick points.
A further object of the invention is a device of this character, the parts of which are so simple in construction that they may be very easily and cheaply manufactured and readily assembled and disassembled. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an edge view of an ice pick constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an inner face view of one part or section thereof, with the pick points in place and with parts broken away. Fig. 3
.ing drawing by like reference characters.
My improved ice pick comprises a head portion A and a handle portion B, the same being formed in two separate castings or sectlons, as clearly illustrated in the drawmg. One of these sections is formed at the head portion A with side flanges 1 and an undercut end flange 2, with any desired number of apertures 3 formed in and extending through the end flange 2, there bemg five in the present instance, although it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to that number, nor to any number of pick points, and with longitudinally disposed recesses 4 which terminate at their inner ends in laterally enlarged openings 5. The complemental section is formed at the head portion A with. longitudinally disposed recesses 6 adapted to register with the recesses i and with enlarged inner ends 7 registering with the openings 5, this last named section being also formed at its end with an extended lip 8 adapted to fit snugly underneath or within the undercut end flange 2 of the first named section. Jfhe second named section is of a width to snugly fit between the side flanges 1 when one section is slipped in an endwise direction upon the other. The two sections at the handle portion B are substantially of like formation, being preferably hollow as shown and formed near one end with interior and registering apertured bosses 9, said bosses being screw-threaded to receive the screw 10 or similar fastening member so as to secure the parts together.
11 designates the pick points. These are preferably formed of steel and comprise cylindrical shank portions terminating in tapering extremities at one end and in heads 12 at their other ends, the shanks being adapted to fit within the bores of the openings formed by the registering recesses 4L and 6 and the heads 12 being accommodated and retained in the enlarged inner ends of the bores that are formed in the openings 5 and 7 From the foregoing description in connec- Cir tion with the accompanying drawing, the
operation of my improved ice pick will be apparent.
In the practical use of the tool, when assembling the parts, the pick points 11 are slipped into the recesses i and are projected outwardly through the apertures 3 in the end flange 2, the heads 12 being received within the openings 5. The other section is then applied, being slipped into position by an endwise movement and the lip 8 being engaged underneath the undercut end flange 2, the two sections of the handle portion B being brought together and the screw 10 or similar fastening device being inserted in place so as to securely hold the parts in proper assembled relation to each other.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple, durable and eflicient construction of ice pick, the parts of which may be very cheaply manufactured and readily as sembled and disassembled without the use of anything more than a screw driver or the like and that the operation of disassembling the parts to remove and replace the pick points may be very easily performed.
While the accompanying drawing illus trates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts withoutdeparting from the sco e of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed, is:

An ice pick comprising a head portion and ahandle portion, the same being constructed in complemental sections, one section of the head portion being formed with side flanges and with an undercut end flange having a plurality of apertures extending therethrough, said section being also formed, in registry with said apertures, with longitudinally extending recesses, the other section being adapted to slip in between the side flanges and formed at its end with a transversely disposed lip adapted to project underneath the undercut end flange of the first named section, pick points receivable in said recesses and adapted to project outwardly through said apertures, and means for securing said sections together.
2. An ice pick comprising a head portion and a handle portion, the same being constructed in complemental sections, one section of the head portion being formed with side flanges and with an undercut end flange having a plurality of apertures extending therethrough, said section being also formed, in registry with said apertures, with longitudinally extending recesses, the other sec tion being adapted to slip in between the side flanges and formed at its end with a transversely disposed lip adapted to project underneath the undercut end flange of the first named section, pick points receivable in said recesses and projecting out through said apertures, and means engaging the sections of the handle portion for holding the parts together.
