have invented a new and Improved Double- Acting Combination-Lock Valve for Barrels, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, 1 and exact description.
My invention relates to double-acting comi bination-lock valves for use more particularly upon receptacles, such as barrels, 8m, the? idea being not only to prevent the contents of i the receptacle from being removed by unau-' I thorized persons, but also to prevent the re.
moval of the valve itself from the receptacle.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters'of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention ready to be applied to a barrel or similar receptacle. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same, slightly enlarged, and showing it as applied to abarrel; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the plug, showing the keyhole.
This invention may, if desired, be used in connection with the lock-valve covered by my United States Patent No. 717,237, dated October 28, 1902.
A stave 1 of the barrel is provided with bolt-holes 2 3 and with a threaded bung-hole 5, which is normally engaged by a threaded pipe 4:. A casing 6 is provided with a spout 7, preferably secured thereto by screw-threads 8, as indicated in Fig. 2. The threaded pipe 4 is screwed by means of threads 5 into the casing 6.
A revoluble plug 9 is provided with an aperture 10, through which the fluid normally passes. This plug 9 is hollow and contains a locking mechanism, which is preferably the same as that shown and described in my above-mentioned patent. I do not limit myself, however, to the particular mechanism shown and described in said patent, as any other suitable locking mechanism may be used. The plug is provided with an angular head 12 for the purpose of rotating the plug 9 by means of a Wrench or by means of the fingers. A closure-lid 13 is hinged upon the angular head 12, which is integral with the cap 11, and which may be removed for the purpose of gaining access to the interior portions of the plug.

A washer 30 is provided at the lower end of theplug 9 and is secured in place byanut 31, mounted upon a stem 32.
The operation of my device is as follows: One end of the threaded pipe at is screwed tightly into the casing 6, as indicated in Fig. 2. The other end of the threaded pipe is thereupon screwed into the bung of the barrel. The bolt-holes 2 3 are disposed adjacent to the bung-hole, so as to register with the bolt-holes 25 and 18, as indicated in Fig. 2. The bolts 22 and 26 are next slipped outwardly or in the general direction of the barrel, being thus caused to engage the boltholes 2 and 3. j The revoluble plug 9 is next placed in the position indicated in Fig. 2. By means of a key the revoluble post 16 may be turned and the lock operated in the usual manner, so as to throw the bolts 20 and 21 into the position indicated in Fig. 2- and to withdraw the .same into the plug. When the bolts are withdrawn from the apertures 18 19, the plug may be rotated by means of the angular head 12; but the beads, 24.- and 28 still remain in contact with the revoluble surface of the plug. This fact prevents the withdrawal of the larger bolts 22 26, and thereby prevents the casing 6 from being unscrewed from the barrel. 7 It matters not whether the valve proper be locked or unlocked; it is equally impractical for unauthorized persons to remove the casing 6 for the reason that the same cannot be turned upon the threaded pipe 4, because of the presence of the bolts 22 26 in the bolt-holes 2 3 of the barrel proper. It is only by removing the revoluble plug 9 from the casing that the bolts 26 22 can be withdrawn, and, as will be seen from Fig. 2, it is impossible to remove the revoluble plug 9 so long as the bolts 20 21 engage the apertures 18 19. The lock of the valve therefore serves not only to prevent the surreptitious removal of the contents of the barrel, but also serves to prevent the withdrawal of the bolts 22 26.
The purpose of the beads 24 and 28 is to facilitate the removalof the large'bolts 22 and 26. This is accomplished by first removing the plug 9 and then by means of the fingernail engaging the beads 24 28 and drawing the bolts 22 26 through the bolt-holes 18 25.
My invention permits of an endless variety of uses, such as will readily suggest themselves to persons in the various arts to which it relates.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A double-acting combination-lock valve for barrels, c. comprising a casing, a threaded member connected therewith and adapted to be screwed into the bung of a barrel, bolts for normally preventing relative movements between said casing and said barrel, and means, controllable at will, for preventing the removal of said bolts.
2. A double-acting combination-lock valve for barrels, &c. comprising a casing, a threaded member connected therewith and adapted to be screwed into the bung of a barrel, bolts for normally preventing relative movements between said casing and said barrel, and look ing mechanism, controllable at will, for normally preventing the withdrawal of said bolts.
3. A double-acting combination-lock valve for barrels, comprising a casing, a threaded member connected therewith and adapted to be screwed into the bung of a barrel, bolts for normally preventing relative movements between said casing and said barrel, and means for normally preventing the removal of said bolts.
4. A double-acting combination-lock valve for barrels, comprising a casing, a threaded member connected therewith and adapted to be screwed into the bung of a barrel, bolts for normally preventing relative movements between said casing and said barrel, and a removable valve-plug mounted within said casing and normally engaging said bolts.
5. A double-acting combination-lock valve for barrels, 850., comprising a casing, a threaded member connected therewith and adapted to be screwed into the bung ot' a barrel, bolts for normally preventingrelative movements between said casing and said barrel, a removable valve-plug mounted within said casing and normally engaging said bolts, and looking mechanism mounted within said valveplug for normally preventing the removal of said bolt-holes in said casing and free to engage said bolt-holes in said receptacle, and means for normally preventing the withdrawal of said bolts from said bolt-holes of said receptacle.
7. In a doubleacting combination lock valve for barrels, 800., the combination of a receptacle provided withbolt-holes, a casing mounted upon said receptacle and free to revolve relatively thereto, said casing being provided with bolt-holes free to mate said boltholes of said receptacle, bolts mounted within said bolt-holes in said casing and free to en gage said bolt-holes of said receptacle, and a valve-plug removably mounted within said casing and normally engaging said bolts, thereby preventing the withdrawal of the same from said bolt-holes of said receptacle.
8. In a double acting combination lock valve for barrels, &c., the combination of a receptacle provided with bolt-holes, a casing mounted upon said'receptacle and free to revolve relatively thereto, bolts slidably mounted within said casing and free to engage said bolt-holes, a valve-plug removably mounted within said casing and normally engaging said bolts, thereby preventing the withdrawal thereof from said bolt-holes of said receptacle, and locking mechanism for normally preventing the removal of said plug from said casing.
9. In a doubleacting combination lock valve for barrels, &c., the combination of a receptacle provided with bolt-holes, a casing mounted upon said receptacle and free to revolve relatively thereto, bolts slidably mounted within said casing and free to engage said bolt-holes, a valve-plug removably mounted within said casing and normally engaging said bolts, thereby preventing the withdrawal thereof from said bolt-holes of said receptacle, and means, controllable at will, for preventing the removal of said plug from said casing.
10. In a double-acting combination-lock valve for barrels, &c., the combination of a receptacle provided with bolt-holes and with a bung-hole disposed adjacent to the same, a casing provided with a threaded member to be screwed into said bung-hole, and also provided with apertures, bolts slidably mounted within said casing and free to engage said bolt-holes of said receptacle, said bolts being provided with apertures and with tongues disname to this specification in the presence of posed adjacent to said apertures, a revoluble two subscribing witnesses. plug mounted within said casing and normaily engaging said tongues, a plurality of WILLIAM HENRY BAKER 5 bolts slidably mounted within said plug and Witnesses: 1 free to engage said apertures of said casing.
