QUINNESEC, MICHIGAN.
KEYLESS PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 14, 1910.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911. Serial No. 555,494.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KRAJDooHA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Quinnesec, in the county of Dickinson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to permutation padlocks, of the type wherein a shackle is locked to a post by means of a plurality of tumblers, and the principal object of the same is to provide a strong and serviceable structure in which the locking post is provided with novel means for rotatably retaining the tumblers thereon, and in which the shackle may be readily swung to an open position when released from said post.
The invention is described in detail in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved permutation padlock. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking post of the padlock. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a cap for said post. Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view taken on the line 55, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of one of the tumblers, showing the shackle engaged therewith.
Referring to said accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the improved padlock comprises a flat base plate 1 which is provided with a hollow vertically arranged post 2 at one end, said post being preferably of cylindrical form and seated in said base plate. Post 2 is provided with a bushing 3 of cork or other yieldable material. At the opposite end, base plate 1 is vided with a longitudinal slot 5 and having its outer or free end outturned to form an annular gripping flange 6. Said post 4 is seated within said plate and has a plurality of tumblers 7 rotatably mounted thereon in superimposed relation. Said tumblers are of duplicate construction and each is provided with a central internal annular flange 8 provided with a slot 9. A cap plate 10 having a central neck 11 is fitted around post 4 with the outer end of its neck 11 engaged by the flange 6 of post 4 to retain the tumblers in is provided neck 11.
The shackle 13, preferably a round bar of metal, is bent to a U-shape to provide the leg 14 which is adapted to be fitted within the resilient bushing 3 of post 2. The other leg 15 of said shackle is flattened and slotted to provide the regularly spaced laterally projecting lugs 16.
To lock the device, tumblers 7 and cap plate 10 are rotated to cause their slots to be in alinement with the slot 5 of post 4, which provides a straight passage for the lugs 16 of shackle leg 15 and after said leg has been placed within post 4 with its lugs projecting into said straight passage, it will be seen that rotating the tumblers, or anyone of them, the flanges 8 of said tumblers engage over said lugs to lock the leg 15 to post 4. The tumblers and the base 1 are suitably marked on their outer surfaces, as by numerals, which can be arranged to form certain combinations which when the numerals of said combination are in vertical alinement, cause the slots of tumblers 8, cap
10 and post 4 to aline, so that the leg 15 may be readily placed from post 4.
As is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the bushing 3 is preferably a piece of cork that has a central longitudinal opening formed in it for the reception of the leg 14 of the shackle. It is preferred to form the bushing of cork for the reason that the same is resilient and will have a tight engagement with the leg 14 which, while not preventing the rotation of said leg, will be such as would prevent the leg being accidentally dropped or shaken from the bushing when leg 15 is free from post 4. Post 4 is preferably formed of sheet material that is rolled into cylindrical form, and the outt-urned gripping flange 6 is arranged so that it engages over the free end of neck 11 of plate 10, to hold said plate in position to prevent vertical movement of the tumblers.
What I claim as my invention is A padlock comprising a base, a hollow locking post rigid therewith and provided with a longitudinal slot, said post provided with an outturned resilient gripping flange at the free end, a cap-plate held on said within or removed post by the gripping flange and provided with a slot adapted to be alined With the project through the slot therein and engage '10 slot of the post, tumblers rotatable on said said tumblers.
post and retained thereon by said cap, said In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my tumblers provided with slots adapted to be signature in presence of tvvo Witnesses.
5 alined With the slots of the post and cap a bearing post carried by said base, and a EDWARD KRAJDOCHA' shackle having one leg engaging the bearl/Vitnesses: ing post and another leg adapted to enter A. T. SETHNEY,
the locking post and provided With lugs that A. M. BRYNGELSON.
