FURNACE.
fPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 741,357, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed December 22, 1902. Serial No. 136,089. (No model.)
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. Monroe-r,
a citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsoy and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnaces; and its object is to provide means for reducing the amount of air entering the furnace over the grate during the operation of firing and to facilitate efficient work by the fireman.
My invention consists, in combination with a boiler-front, of a fire-door on said front and foot-operated lever mechanism for opening and closing said door.
My invention further consists of the elements, features of construction, and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the front of a stationary boiler-furnace, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1.
In the drawings let A represent the boilerfurnace, B the boiler-front, and O my improvement, which is shown attached to said boiler-front.
My improvement consists, specifically, of the following parts: A door 2, which is pivoted at 3 on the door-frame at. The door-frame is preferably of the projecting type, as shown in Fig. 1, and is fastened to the boiler-front by means of bolts 4.. The door when closed projects outward from its pivot-point and rests against the front edge of said frame. A lug 5 is cast near the lower edge of the door. The door swings out when opened into the broken-line position. A shaft 6 is j ournaled in the bearings 7 above the door, and two wheels 8 and 9,-of different diameters, are mounted upon said shaft. A chain 10 is fastened through the perforation 11 in the lug 5 and connects with the larger wheel 8 at 12, so as to wind upon saidwheel when the shaft is turned. The bearings 7 are fastened to the boiler-front by means of the bolts 13. A counterweight let is suspended from the wheel 8 by means of the chain 15. The tendcncy of the weight is to open the door by revolving the wheel 8. The chain 15 is fas toned to the periphery of wheel 8 at 10. A foot-lever D is pivoted at 17 on a frame 18, which is bolted to the floor at 19 in front of the boiler. The end of the lever adjoining the boiler-front is curved up at 20 and perforated at 21. A pulley 22 is journaled below the upturned end 20 of the lever in the frame 23, which is bolted at 24 to the floor. 25 is attached through the perforation .21 in said lever and passes around the pulley 22 and has its opposite end attached to the periphery of the wheel 9 at 25', so as to turn the shaft in the direction. of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 when the outer end 26 of the foot-lever is depressed. This movement just described winds the chain 10 on the wheel 8 and opens the door. Turnbuckles 27 are attachedto the chains 10 and 25, by means of which the length of the chains may be adjusted.
It is obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates that various modifications of the mechanisms shown and de scribed may be used without departing from the principles which I have applied, the broad idea being the combination of foot-operating lever and counterweight mechanisms with the fire-door of a furnace to open and quickly and automatically close the door, whereby the amount of air entering the furnace over the fire when the door is opened for firing purposes is reduced to a minimum.
Having described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class set forth, consisting of a furnace-front, a door hung upon said front and adapted to swing out, a pair of wheels of different diameters j ournaled above said door, a connection between. said wheels, a second connection between the larger wheel and the swinging end of said door, a counterweight hung from said larger wheel, footoperating mechanism adjoining said f urnacefront, and a third connection between. said foot-operating mechanism and the smaller wheel, for the purposes specified.
2. A device of the class set forth, consisting in combination with a furnace -front, of,
a door hung upon said front and adapted to swing outward, a shaft ournaled above said door, a pair of wheels of different diameters A chain fixed upon said shaft, a connection between the larger wheel and the lower part of said door, a counterweight hung from said larger wheel, a foot-lever adjoining said furnacefront, and a connection between one end of said lever and the smaller wheel; whereby, when the lever is depressed, the shaft is turned. and the door opens, and when the lever is released the shaft returns to its original position andthe door closes.
3. A device of the class set forth, consisting of a furnace-front, a door hinged to said front and adapted to swing out, a pair of wheels of different diameters journaled above said door, a counterbalance-weight connected with said wheels, a flexible connection between the swinging end of said door and the Wheel of larger diameter, a foot-lever adj oining the furnace-front, and a second flexible connection between said foot-lever and the wheel of smaller diameter, for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. MONFORT.
