To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. KnLLEMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holder, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Oonveyers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin This invention relates to smoke conveyors for furnaces and the like and has for its object the production of an eflicient means for conveying the smoke from the furnace for preventing the same from being discharged into the open air.
Another object of this invention is the production of an ellicient means for carrying the smoke to a sewer pipe and creating a draft adjacent the pipe so as to allow the same to be readily discharged from the furnaces.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the furnace showi ig the sewer pipe partly in section. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 8-3, of Fig. 1. Fig. at is an enlarged vertical section through the suction fan casin Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the casing for directing the suction into the suction fan casing. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of the shield member for retarding the passage of sparks in the suction drum casing. Fig. 7 is a section through the shield as illustrated in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section taken on line 88, of Fig. 1.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the furnaces which are provided with smoke discharge pipes 52, and within these smoke discharges pipes 2 are placed the gate valves 8. These gate valves 3 may be operated by means of the handles 1 for opening and closing the draft when so desired. The pipes 2 communicate with a common communicating pipe 5 which extends transversely of all the furnaces 1 and carries an inlet air pipe or blower pipe 6 at one end for admitting air into the communicating pipe 5.
The casing 7 is carried by one end of the pipe 5 and this casing is provided with a- Specification of Letters Patent.

flange S at one end which firmly engages the side face of the casing 9 for connecting the casing 7 to the casing 9. The casing 9 is provided with a smoke inlet aperture 10 for allowing the smoke to pass therethrough, and a suction fan 11.1 is journaled within the casing 9 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The fan 11 is mounted upon the shaft 12, and this shaft 12 is driven by means of the pulley 13 over which passes a drive belt or other driving means 1 1.
A shield screen 15 is positioned upon the bottom of the casing T and comprises a substantially semi-circular inner face 16 which is perforated to constitute a screen for allowing the passage of smoke or obnoxious gases, but preventing the passage of cinders or other large particles that might pass through the pipe 5. A deflector head 17 is carried near the upper end of the shield 15 and overhangs the same so as to constitute a ballle plate for preventing the passage of large cinders past the head 17. The shield 15 tapers toward its lower end as indicaled at 18 so as to direct the cinders back into the furnace where the same may be fully consumed. The shield 15 extends partially across the entrance opening 19 of the casing 7 so as to partially close the same, and leave a space above the shield. 15 to permit the free passage of smoke over the shield 15 and through the casing 7.
A discharge pipe 20 is secured to the lower end of the casing 9 as illustrated in Fig. l and is supported in spaced relation from the furnace by means of a bracket 21. The lower end of the pipe 20 is provided with an angularly extending spout 22 which is positioned within a sewer pipe 23 for discharging the smoke and gases into the sewer pipe as illustrated in Fig. 1. The sewer pipe 28 is preferably arranged so as to have running water pass therethrough to convey the smoke and sediment that might accumulate thcrethrough toward the point of discharge.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very ellicicnt means has been produced for conveying smoke and obnoxious gases from furnaces to such a place so as to prevent the same from being discharged into the atmosphere. It should, of course, be understood that the sewer pipe 23 may be so inclined as to easily convey the gases and smoke rapidly from the point of discharge from the furnaces.
It should be understood that the invention may be modified in its detail mechanical construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the class described the combination with a furnace, of a communicating pipe, a blower pipe secured to one end thereof, a fan casing positioned adjacent the opposite end of said communicating pipe, an auxiliary casing connecting the end of said communicating pipe with said fan casing, a shield casing positioned within said auxiliary casing for preventing the passage of cinders therethrough, a sewer pipe, and means for forming a communication between said fan casing and said sewer pipe for conveying the smoke to said sewer pipe.
In a device of the class described the combination with a furnace, of a communieating pipe, a blower pipe positioned at one end thereof, a fan casing, an auxiliary casing connecting the opposite end of said communicating pipe with said fan casing, a shield casing positioned within said auxiliary casing and comprising a perforated body provided with a substantially concave inner face terminating in an inclined chute portion at its lower end, an overhanging bafile plate carried by the upper end of said shield casing for retarding the passage of heavy cinders therethrough, means for creating a suction within said fan casing, a sewer pipe, and means for forming a com munication between said fan casing and said sewer 'pipe.
8. In a device of the class described the combination with a plurality of furnaces, of a common communicating pipe, a blower pipe positioned at one end thereof, a fan asing, an auxiliary casing connecting the opposite end of said communicating pipe with said fan casing, a shield casing positioned within said fan casing and comprising a perforated body provided with an overhanging head for retarding the passage of cinders into said fan casing, a sewer pipe, a fan positioned in said fan casing, a pipe depending from said fan casing and communica'ting with said sewer pipe for discharging smoke and obnoxious gases from said fan casing into said sewer pipe.
