CHARLES F. CREHORE, OF NEWTON LOWER FALIZS, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 74,996, dated March 3, 1868.

TO ALL WHOM 1'1 MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Gnuuonn, of Newton Lower Falls, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Process for Treating Diil'crcnt or Various Fabrications of Paper for Various Purposes; and do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the specimens accoinpanying this specification.
lhe object sought in making this invention is to treat or prepare the various fabrications of paper. such as press-papers, bindcrs-board, &c., in such manner as to render it comparatively hard, semi-elastic, and water proof, and susceptible also of a highly-finished surface.
The invention consists in subjecting the paper in the action of sulphur, preferably by immersing it in a bath of boiling or niclted sulphur, the temperature of which is to be regulated by the required hardness of the finished material. The action of the sulphur has the effect of rendering the paper hard, semi-elastic, and waterproof, as well as compact in body,.und with a susceptibility of high finish, if desired.
Among the various instances of application of p'hieh my invention is susceptible, so far as the experiments made have proved it 'a success, a particular one is its use as press-paper for cloth-printers use, as well as forv those of ordinary printing, the advantages of which win at once manifest themselves to persons skilled in the craft.-
For book-binders use the requisite amount of rigidity-may be obtained with great reduction in bulk" and weight, and, as .a. consequence, in cost, as compared with the material now in use. 7
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States' The treatment, substantially as before described, of the different fabrication ofpaper, by combining the sauce with sulphur, or any combination with or equivalent to sulphur, for the purpose of producing the material or effects before explained. I
. CHARLES FRED. OREHORE.
