GEORGE WASHINGTON MOMIL LIAN, OF RUSTON, LOUISIANA.
SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,130, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed March 11, 1903. Serial No. 147.299- (No model.) i
.To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON MCMILLIAN, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Ruston, in-the parish of Lincoln and State of Louisiana, have invented a new A further object of the device is to provide a handle-fastening, the relative dispositionof the several parts being such that the liability of the clampingjaws to spread or buckle while securing the blade to the handle is obviated and which will effectually resist any lateral or torsional strain incident to sawing.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, aud pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and mi.- nor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this inven tion.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crosscut-saw provided with a handle-fastening constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the locking-pin, clam ping-jaws, and plates detached; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a modified form of clamp.
' Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawings.
l designates the bladeof an ordinary crosscut-saw, and, 2 the handle, formed of wood or other suitable material, having a reduced end portion 3,adapted to receive a pair of clam pingplates 4 and 5. The clamping- plates 4 and 5 .from buckling'or spreading.
are substantially semicircular in contour, having their inner surfaces-concaved, as shown at 6, to conform'to the shape of the handle, and these plates are provided with'coincident openings 7 and 8, adapted to receive a bolt 9, which also passes through an opening 10 inthe handle and is provided with terminal threads 11, which engage the interior threads of 'a'wing-nut 12, and by means of which the plates are clamped to the handle. The bolt 9 is provided with a tapering rectangular or polygonal portion 10, which fits within the correspondingly shaped opening 8- in the clamping-plate 5, the end of the bolt being bifurcated, as shown, formihg a pair of fiat parallel arms 11*, or clamping-jaws, which lie one on each side of the saw-blade, the ,end of the blade being seated in a longitudinally-disposed groove or channel 12 in the clamping-plate A preferably rectangular slot or opening 13i s formed in the sawblade at apointadjacent one end thereof adapted to receive a gib 14, which passes through'said openingand coincident openings 15 in the parallel arms 11". The gib is provided with laterally-extending heads 16, the inner faces of. which are inclined or beveled outwardly from the body portion, as shown at 17, so that when the gibis in positi n and the nut 12 tightened the inclined faces of the heads will bear against the sides of the parallel arms, securely clamping the sawblade between them and preventing the arms The width of the pin 14 is somewhat lessthan the openings 13 and 15, so as to permit the pin to be easily introduced thereinand admit of a slight longitudinal movement of said pin, so that when f the several parts are clamped together it will cause the rear end of the pin to engage the rear endof the slot or opening 13 and thelaterally-extending heads to bear against the face of the parallel-arms, as clearly shown.
channel 12 and the key or pin inserted in the openings 13 and 15, with its laterally-extending heads engaging the parallel arms 11*, and by tightening the wing-nut will cause the several parts to be clamped together.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have produced a fastening composed of few parts by means of which a firm and rigid connection between the saw-blade and handle is obtained, but a single wingnut being used for securing the clampingplates in position, drawing the saw to its seat and clamping the jaws on the saw.
In Fig. t I have shown a modified form of fastening on which the clamping-plates are provided with intersecting handle-receiving grooves or sockets 18, which permit the handle to be secured either in a vertical plane or at right angles to the saw-blade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described con1prising a handle,clamping-plates secured thereto, a bolt passing through the handle and clam ping-plates and having its end bifurcated for the reception of a saw-blade, there being coincident openings in the bolt and saw-blade, and a gib extending through said openings and having inclined heads for clamping against the outer faces of the bolt.
2. A device of the class described comprisingahandle, clainpingplates secured thereto, a threaded bolt passing through the handle and clamping-plates and provided with a clamping-nut, the opposite end of the bolt being squared and having its end bifurcated for the reception of a saw-blade, there being coincident openings in the saw-blade and squared end of the bolt and a gib extending through said openings and having inclined heads for clamping against the outer faces of the bolt.
3. A device of the class described, compri'sing a handle, a pair of clamping-plates secured thereto, one of said plates being provided with a rectangular bolt receiving opening and a longitudinally-disposed groove or channel intersecting said opening, a bolt having a bifurcated end portion passing through the clamping-plates and the handle and provided with a jam-nut, a saw-blade seated in the longitudinal groove or channel in the clam ping-plate, there being coincident openings in the bolt and saw-blade and a gib extending through said openings and having inclined heads for clamping against the outer faces of the bolt.
4. In a device of the class described, a threaded bolt having a saw-receiving slot at one end and provided with a transverse opening extending through the slotted end, a gib extending through said opening and having inclined heads for clamping against the outer faces of the bolt, and a clamping-screw on the threaded end of the bolt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGTON MCMILLIAN.
