BENCH-DOG.

Application filed March 15, 1884. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RILEY Den, of Leonardsburg, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Bench-Dog, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to dogs for holding work on wood-working benches; and it consists of a channel-bar of steel of U, V, or W shaped cross-section,notched transversely near the upper end to form teeth for engaging the work, and inserted in the bench at a slight inclination from the vertical, and retained in position by a clainp underneath the bench.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wood-working bench with my improved dog applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved dog. Fig. 3 is an inverted sectional plan view taken on line :0 x, Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 show, respectively, the U and W shaped channel-bar.

In the bench top A is formed a series of V- shaped mortises, inclining at a slight angle from the vertical toward the direction from which pressure will be applied. In any one of the said V-shaped mortises the V-shaped channel-bar B may be inserted with the channel of the bar opening toward the work to be held by the dog. A notch, 0, made transversely across the channel-bar, forms two projecting teeth, D, capable of engaging the end of the wood being worked upon the bench To the under side of the bench-top are secured braces E, which project into the channel of the bar B. The angular edge of the bar B is received between arms F, pivoted on screws a, entering the under side of the bench-top. A thumb-screw, Z), passes through one of the arms F and screws into the other arm, and is capable of clamping the two arms tightly against the sides of the bar B, so as to hold the bar B at any desired elevation above the bench-top.

When the U and W shaped bars shown in Figs. 4. and 5 are employed, the mortises in the bench-top, the braces E, and the clampingarms F must be correspondingly modified. With the U and V shaped bars two teeth, D, are formed by the transverse notch O. WVhen the W-shaped bar is employed, three such teeth will be formed.

My improved bench-dog may be filed and sharpened like a saw, and it may be renewed by forming new notches C. It is capable of holding work firmly either edgewise or flatwise.

. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An improved benchdog consisting of an angular bar provided with a longitudinal channel or channels, and having teeth on the upper forward edges of the sides of the said channel or channels, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with a top having V- shaped mortises, of a dog V-shaped in crosssection, and means for clamping the dog in the mortises, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combination, with the bench-top A, having V-shaped mortises, of the V-shaped dog B, the braces E, and aclamp formed of the pivoted arms F and the thumb-screw b, substantially as herein shown and described.
