COMBBNATION LAM P ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,111, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed February 3, 1903. Serial No. 141,666. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JULIAN MAGRUDER, residing at Poolesville, Montgomery county, State of Maryland, and GEORGE G. W. MA- GRUDER, residing at Tennallytown, District of Columbia, citizens of the United States, haveinvented a new and useful Combination Lamp Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combination lamp attachment.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of great strength and durability adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary lamp and capable of forming a support for holding the burner of the lamp while the latter is being filled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a match safe or holder and forming a shade for the eyes while reading and adapted at the same time to operate as a reflector for throwing the light.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lamp attachment having a combined shade and reflector adapted to have printed or otherwise applied to it a calendar, rule, and various other matter interesting and useful.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp attachment constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a lamp and illustrating the manner of supporting a burner. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the device detached. Fig. i is a detail View, partly in section, illustrating the manner ofengaging the neck of a lamp.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.
1 1 designate a pair of approximately circular clamping-jaws adapted to embrace and engage the neck 2 of a lamp 3 and having flattened outer portions adapted to lie within a groove or corrugation 4, with which the neck of the lamp is usually provided. The flattened engaging portions 5 of the jaws are extended and curved outward, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to form a flaring mouth or entrance to facilitate engaging the jaws with the neck of a lamp.
The jaws are hingedly connected at their inner ends by means of a link 6, through which the spring-wire, of which the jaws are constructed, passes, and the said jaws are con-.
nected with a pair of outwardly-diverging arms 7, forming'a broad support adjacent to the neck of the lamp to receive the burner 8 for supporting the same while the lamp is being filled. The burner rests upon the arms 7, as clearlyshown in Fig. 1, and it is held thereon by means of an upright shade-support 9. The arms 7, which diverge from the neck of the lamp when the device is applied thereto, also serve as handles for opening the jaws in placing the device on a lamp and in removing it therefrom.
The jaws, the arms, and the shade-holder are constructed from spring-wire or similar material and consist of a single piece of the same, which is coiled at the center to form a combined spring coil and clamp 10. The coil 10, which is arranged at the top of the shadeholder, is disposed in an upright position and is adapted to receive a plate or card 11 between'its coils, whereby the same is supported in an upright position in front of the light to form either a shade or a reflector. The resilient material is then extended to form inclined sides to provide the upright holder for the combined shade and reflector. The wire is preferably coiled at the base of the upright holder to form opposite eyes 12 and 13 to receive a combined guide and supporting-rod 14. The wire is then bent to form the arms and the jaws. The combined guide and supporting-wire 14, which is disposed transversely of the outer portion of the device at the base of the upright holder, has one end bent to form an eye 15, which is linked into the adjacent eye 12, and its other end is extended through the eye 13 to permit the same to slide on it when the arms 7 are compressed for opening the jaws." The guide prevents the jaws from twisting excessively in the link while manipulating the device to place the same on and remove it from a lamp, and it is also adapted to receive a match box or holder 16.- The match box or holder 16, which may be of any desired construction, is designed to be of a sufficient size to hold six or eight matches to be used in case of emergency to relight the lamp while it is being carried should it become accidentally extinguished; but the match safe or box may be made of any desired size, as will be readily understood. The match box or safe is provided at its front with a suitable strikingsurface, and it has an eye or clip 17 at the top for engaging the combined guide and supporting-rod, whereby the said match box or safe is hinged to the attachment. When the match box or holder is provided at the top, as illustrated in Fig. 3, with a spring-clip, it may be readily connected to and removed from the attachment, if desired.
The plate or card 11, which may be constructed of any suitable material, is designed to be provided on its exterior with a calendar and on its inner face with a rule and various other matter which may be found to be useful, and the card or plate is readily removable to permit the rule to be used. The
card or plate may have a glazed inner face or be otherwise constructed to form a reflector, or a separate plate or piece may be applied either to the holder 9 or to the plate or card 11 when it is desired to form a reflector.
It will be seen that the lamp attachment is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, thatit may be easily man ufactured, and that it is adapted to be readily applied to and removed from a lamp of the ordinary construction. Furthermore, it will be clear that the device is adapted to support the burner of a lamp While the latter is being filled, and that it serves both as a shade and as a reflector, and that it is also adapted to support a number of matches within convenient reach to enable a lamp to be quickly relighted should it become accidentally extinguished. Furthermore, the combined shade and reflector is detachably held in position to permit it to be removed for separate use, and it may bediscarded when it is desired to apply a new card or plate to the device.
