To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS F. FLINN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the County of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candlesticks, of which the following is a speciiication.

' This invention relates to Candlesticks and,

more especially, to Candlesticks of the'portable variety. The objects of the invention are: to provide a Candlestick which will permit the candle to be entirely consumed; to provide a Candlestick which will firmly hold various sizes of candles; to provide a Candlestick which will hold the candle until the wax is competely melted and will then allow the unconsumed portion of the wick to drop into the wax receiving receptacle; 'to provide a Candlestick with means for catching the melted wax so that the same may be easily and quickly removed; to provide a candlestick in which a matchbox may be conveniently placed and held; to provide a candlestick with means thereon for scratching a match, said means being so disposed as not to disfigure the Candlestick andarranged in a groove so that the head of the match is readily and easily guided upon the abrading surface; to provide -a candlestick of simple and cheap construction, containing a minimum of distinct parts, which will be of pleasing appearance and convenient and eiiicient in operation. y

With these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, my invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts set forth in the following speciiication, more particularly pointed out in the claim, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings; it being understood, however, that slight changes in the structural arrangement and Combination of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the claim.

In said drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a Candlestick constructed in accordance with my invention, a candle and match box being shown therein in dotted lines.

Referring to said drawings by numerals: The Candlestick comprises a dished base l which is stamped or struck-up to form the Centrally disposed inner dish 2, thus making the base in the form of a dish surrounded by an integral', annular trough, as appears most clearly Fig. 2. In the annular groove 3, formed by the junction of the dish 1 and centraly dish 2, on v-the under surface of the base, may be placed, in any suitable manner, an abrading substance 4, for the purpose of scratching matches thereon.

Secured to the rim ofthe base at diametrically opposite points, and preferably to the outer surface of the rim, in any suitable manner, as by soldering; is a resilient candle engaging member. This resilient candle engaging member is formed, preferably, of a Single piece of suitable wire bent to form an elongated parallelogram Consisting of the ends 5 and the sides, which are bent as will now be described.

The sides are bent, at their ends, into substantially semi-circles 6 and, immediately contiguous these semi-circles, into arc like bends 7 their vdirection beingV opposite to` that of the semi-Circles 6. From the curved portions 7 each side continues in straight, spaced portions 8; the portions 8 of each side slightly tapering toward each other; for a suitable distance. The portions S terminate in the inwardly curved portions 9, from which portions 9 the sides extend downwardly in the spaced, preferably parallel portions 10. At the lower extremities of the portions 10 the sides are bent toward each other to form the horizontally disposed, overlapping loops 11.

As will be seen most clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the curved portions 6 form a convenient and easily engaged loop for the finger in carrying the Candlestick. The Curved portions 7 bring the sides of the resilient member in proper distance from the base to allow a match-box 12 to be slipped between the sides of the resilient member and the base, and to be firmly held therein. The portions 9 and 10 form a resilient gripping means for the candle 13, and the loops 11 form a base or seat for said candle.

In practice the device operates as follows: A Candle is inserted between the members 9 and 10 of the sides of the resilient member-the butt of the candle resting upon the loops Il. The match box l2 may be opened without removing the same from place to a sufficient eXtent to allow the extraction of a match therefrom. The match may be ignited by scratching upon the side of the match box or on the abrading surface l. IVhen the candle is ignited, the melted wax will flow downwardly into dish 2, from whence it may be easily removed in any usual and well known manner. As the candle burns down to the end it will heat the surrounding members 9, l0 and 11 sufciently toremove any accumulated waX therefrom, and the wick, when the wax is completely melted, will fall through the space between the loops 1l into the dish 2. As will be'l noted, the resilient member, beingiattached to the outer surface of the base forms no obstruction on the surface of the base when the same is to be cleaned.

Having'l described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a Candlestick, a dish-shaped base, a resilient candle engaging member suitably connected, at its ends, to said base, and a candle gripping portion formed in said member comprising vertically disposed spaced portions, and horizontally disposed overlapping loops 'carried by said Vertical portions.
