Be it known that l, Lrnnrmn BULLARD, of Maribormin the county of Middlesex, and -State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture 'of Shoes, of which thc following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawfingamnkfng apart of this specification, in which- Figurel represents a. shoe made on the plan of mv improvement.
Figure 2 is a. pattern of the counter.
Figures 3 and 5 are patterns of the vamp and Figure 4 is a pattern of the' quarter.
The object of my invention is toprcvide for au economical use of the material employed in making up the shoe, and at the same time to secure a better-fitting and more serviceable shoe than those of the'ordinnry make; and the invention consists in so forming the parts that compose the shoe, and combining them together, as to give it the appearance of a boot over the foot, and insure a perfect fit to the heel and ankio.
Referring to the drawings, iig. 1 represents a. shoe made of the several parts, which are cut, respectively, after the patterns shown. A is the vamp, cut in the form Shown in iig. 3, of a single piece. and forms the instep and` partly the sides of the shoe, und .is'sewed to the counter C in a vertical seam on either side, as shown in iig. 1. Af', in iig. 5, represents another form of vamp, and is cut from one piece, and sewed only on one side, at a, the other side extending. around to the centre of the heel in the rear, as at a','and when in this form only one quarter, as shown at B, is required. B, iig. 4, represents the form of the quarter, of which two are used when the vamp is cut in the form' shown in g. 3. It is cut in the rear, se as to adapt the parts whcnsewed together to the contour of the heel. The quarter, B, is made to extend don-n to the sole of the heel at the rear of its'junction a with the vamp, where it is properly secured. It is also sewed to the vamp on the curved line b, extending to the instep. The counter C is cut in the form shown in iig. 2, and when the pattern A of the vamp, iig. 3, is used, is sewed on both sides, as shown at a, fig. 1, to the said vamp, and extends around the heel on the outside of the quarter, by which means a smooth surface is secured on the inner sides of the shoe, thus obvating the diculty `often experienced intheturning down of the stiffening of the same.
The shoe thus lmade has the appearance of a. boot at the sides, and the portions composing the shoe may be cut according to the quality et the leather required for each part, consequently saving much expense in working up the stock. The shoe may be nished when thus made up, indifferent styles, to suit the taste-or fancy of the wearer.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the parts A or A', B and C, constituting, respectively, the vamp, quarter, and counter l of a shoe, when the said parts are cut in the form and secured together in the manner shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this speciication in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
