Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVED SHOE.
'Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,041, dated May 29, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ACHILLEs BALLARD, of Dublin, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, made part of this specification.
I construct a shoe the upper of which is formed of two pieces, A and B. rlhe vamp A is shaped as shown in the drawing, formed into proper shape in the ordinary manner by crimping` or otherwise. The quarter B, I form in two pieces so joined as to form a single piece, the form of which is indicated in the drawing. The seam joining the two ou each side is carried from the sole at or near the front ofthe heel of the shoe upward to a point where it would meet aline drawn from the -point of the heel to the middle of the curve above the instep, as indicated by the line x x. At this point the quarter B is carried forward and secured to the vamp by the rivet C on the line x m. This point is important, for if this rivet be placed above this line the shoe could not be put on a foot that it would fit, and if placed below it would not stay on. rlhe quarter is carried perpendicularly from the front angle of this shoulder, while the rear part of the vamp recedes, as shown, being carried 011 the outside of the quarter.
D is a strap for pulling` on the shoe, while E represents a thong or strap and buckle or other equivalent device for fitting the shoe around the ankle.
What I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, as an article of manufaeture, is- Y A shoe the varnp A and quarter B of which are shaped and united substantially as set forth.
