To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, JOHN H. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provideuce, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to garment-fasteners, and particularly to a fastener for holding a dress-skirt, a shirt-waist, and a belt in their proper relative positions.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is effective for the intended purpose and in which the beltfastener is detachable, so that it maybe dispensed with where a belt with a large clasp or buckle is used, which if connected with the fastener would cause discomfort to the wearer.

With this and other obj cots in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a garment-fastener embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge View. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view illustrating the application of the invention.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the fastener, which consists of a plate of suitable length provided in its lower portion with a row or series of keyhole-shaped slots or apertures 2 for engagement with the stud of a corset, whereby it is adapted to be adj ustably applied thereto. Above the apertures the plate is provided with two forwardly and downwardly projecting hooks 3 and 4, arranged one above the other, the upper hook serving to receive the edge of the outer or dress skirt and the lower hook adapted to receive the usual tape or string which fastens around the waist and ties at the front in order to provide a former or shaper under which the front portion of the lower edge of the shirt-waist is tucked to give an extended or long-waisted effect.

The prime purpose of my invention is to provide a fastenerof this character with beltretaining means which may be applied and removed as occasion requires. Where an ordinary form of belt is employed which is unprovided with a large clasp or buckle, it is desirable to provide some means for retaining the belt in place and preventing it from riding up. lVhere, however, a belt having a large clasp or buckle is employed, a retaining device of this kind cannot well be used, as its engagement with the belt would, in connection with the buckle or clasp, render the belt too stiff or inflexible, and thus cause discomfort to the wearer. In order to provide a belt-holder which may or may not be used under these conditions, I form the plate lat its upper end with an elongated vertical slot or aperture 6 and provide a belt-retainer in the form of a head 7, consisting of a metallic plate bent or offset at its center to form a guideway 8, which guideway is open at the top and rear and is adapted to receive the said upper end of the plate. The flange 9 of the head which surrounds the sides and lower end of the guideway thus formed is provided with a slot 10, through which the plate is adapted to be inserted within and withdrawn from the guideway, thus enabling the head to be applied and removed whenever desired. To secure the parts together, the head is provided with a locking device consisting of a pin 11, mounted to turn or rotate therein and having a cross-piece or latch 12, which conforms to the shape of vth'e said slot 6. When this latch is turned to a position transversely of the slot, the plateis held from withdrawal; but when the latch is turned to coincide longitudinally with the slot it is apparent that the upper end of the plate may be moved out of engagement therewith and then withdrawn from the guideway or the head slipped off the plate, as preferred. The head or guideway is provided at its upper end with a forwardly and downwardly extending hook 13, to which is suitably fastened an ornamental button or rosette 14:, which is adapted to engage the belt.

In the use of the device, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the plate 1 is connected, by means of one of its apertures 2, with the lower stud tions left unbuttoned below the hook 3 and tucked under said shaper, whereby the desired extended orlong-waisted effect is imparted thereto. Then the dress-skirt c is drawn up and secured with its upper edge or waistband c inserted under the hook 3, and finally the belt 01 is applied and its upper edge tucked behind the button or rosette 14, by which it is retained in position and prevented from working up. When thus applied, the lower edge of the belt extends down over the hook 4 and conceals the same from view.

From, the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A garment-fastener comprising a body portion provided with means of attachment to a corset, a belt-fastener consisting of a head having a button or rosette to engage the belt, and means for detachably connecting the head to the upper end of the body portion, substantially as described. I

2. A garment-fastener, comprising a plate provided with means of'attachment to a corse t,and with hooks located one above the other, one of them being adapted for engagement with a forming-tape, and the other adapted to receive the edge of the skirt, said hooks being disposed below the upper end of the plate so as to cause the portion of the plate above the hooks to form a supporting extension, and a belt-engaging member detachably supported upon said extension, sub stantially as described.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion provided with means of attachment to a corset, a belt-fastener consisting of a head having a guideway to receive a portion of the said body portion, and a slot giving entrance thereto, and having a button or rosette to engage the edge of the belt, and means for detachably connecting the head to the body portion.

4. A garment-fastener, comprising a plate provided with slots for connection with a corset, and with hooks located one above the other, one of them being adapted for engagement with a waist=lengthening tape, and the other adapted to receive the edge of the skirt, and a belt-retainer comprising a guideway slidably engaging the plate and provided with a hook portion to engage the edge of the belt, and means for detachably connecting said head 'to the plate, substantially as described.
