NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EDWARD MCCLURE, on CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR on ONE-HALF TO FRANKLIN P. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ELEVATOR-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,708, dated March 24, 1903.,
Application filed December 19, 1902. Serial No. 135,863. tNo model.)
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MOCLURE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in elevator-doors; and its object is to produce a device of the class wherein one of two sliding doors moves behind the other, both doors being moved by any force acting on one of them. v
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, which are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved doors and a portion of the inclosure looking from the inside of the elevator-well. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the doors in an open position.
Referring to the drawings, A and B are two sliding doors running on hangers a, and b, respectively. Both doors slide to the right looking at them as in Fig. 1, and the door A in that position slides behind the door B.
The door A is provided with a rail A towardthe lower part of its 1eft-hand edge, the rail forming with the contiguous'edge of the door A a vertical guideway.
(3 indicates the wall of theinclosure, in
which is a doorway which the doors close, and
avertically-extending bar 0 is provided adjacent to the right-hand edge of the door B,
which is provided with a rail 0, which forms with the contiguous edge of the bar 0 avertical guideway. A leverD is pivoted between its ends upon the door B. The opposite ends of the lever D are curved in opposite directions, so that when the body of the lever is horizontal one end is above and one is below' the pivot. The lever bears at its ends rollers d d, which run in the guideways formed between the door and the rail A and the bar and the rail 0, respectively.
The operation of the device will be readily apparent. When it is desired to open the doors, the door A is pushed to the right. This forces down the left-hand end ofthe lever D, the roller (1' running along the guideway.- Simultaneously, of course, the right-hand end of the lever is raised, and the roller 61 runs up -in its guideway.
This tends to swing the three points-that is, the two rollers and the fulcrum of the lever-into the same vertical line. As the door A is continuously pushed to the right, the lever swings toward a vertical line and the twodoors are simultaneously opened, the door A moving at a greater speed than the door B. The lever D, as shown in the drawings, is too nearly at right angles to the edge of the door when the doors are closed to permit them to be readily opened; but it can be very readily started by pushing down on the left-hand end. I consider this a great advantage, for the reason that it is desirable to have a device which synchronizes the movements of the two doors where it can be grasped and started by hand. Another advantage of this structure lies in the fact that when the lever lies too near the horizontal to permit the doors to be opened without first starting the lever the lever forms an automatic lock for the doors. Still a further advantage of the device lies in the fact that it can readily be accommodated to a greater number of sliding-door leaves by merely adding guideways to the additional leaves and corresponding rollers on the lever.
I realize that considerable variation can be made in the details of this construction, and for this reason I do not wish to limit myself to the specific form herein set forth.
I claim as new and-desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a device of the class described,- the combination with a suitable wallhaving a doorway and a plurality of doors adapted to close the doorway, and slidable one behind the other to open the same, of a lever ful, crumed between its ends on the slow door and in running engagement with the wall and the fast door, said lever, when the doors are closed, being too nearly at right angles to the edge of the door to permit the doors to be readily opened, except by moving the lever.
2. The combination with a suitable wall having a doorway and a pair of doors, slidable one behind the other to open the same,
of vertical guideways on the Wall and fast the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this door respectively and eleven pivoted between 12th day of December, A. D. 1902. its ends to the slow door and havin a, running engagement with said guidewg s, suh- EDVARD MCCLURE' stantiaily as described. \Vitn'esses:
In Witness whereof I have signed the above CHAS. O. SHERVEY, application for Letters Patent at Chicago, in RUSSELL \VILES.
