ELEVATOR-DOOR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,707, dated March 24, 1903.

To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MCCLURE, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have i'nvented'certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in elevator-doors; and its object is to produce a device of the class wherein one of two sliding doors moves hehind the other, both doors being moved by any force acting'on one of them.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features of. construction which are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved doors looking from the inside of the elevator-well. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the latch and parts immediately adjacent thereto, andFig. 4 is a section in the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, A and'B are two sliding doors running onhangers aand'b, respectively, and adapted, to close the dooropening in the .inclosure or wall E. Both doors slide to the right looking at them as in Fig. 1, and the door A from that position slides in front of the door B. The door A is provided with a rail A on its right-hand edge toward the upper part, this rail forming, with the contiguous edge of the door A, a vertical guideway. The door B is likewise provided' with a rail B on its right-hand side toward the bottom of the door, which f orms asimilar guideway between itself and thecontiguous edge of the door. A lever C is pivoted on a bracket 0 preferablysecured on the floor at a distance from the bottom of the door B, when closed, substantially equal to the breadth'of the door. This leverC is provided with two rollers c c, the roller 0 running in the guideway formed by the rail B and the roller 0 running in the guideway formed between the door A and the guideway A.. The lever C, it will be seen, is of the second order, and when force is applied to the door A to open it the roller 0 is forced upward in the guideway. As the lever rises and swings about its pivot as a center the rollers swing toward the same vertical line,
-which is immediately over the pivot of the lever, and simultaneously move the two doors to the right, the door B moving, of course, at half the speed of the door A. A latch D is provided on the door A, which is adapted to engage with the end of the lever C, the latch being spring-pressed towardthe end of the lever by a spring The end of the lever is beveled at c to cause it to latch automatically when the doors are closed and it comes down to the position shown in Fig. A knob d is provided on the latch D, which by pressure to the right-that is, in the direction in which the doors slide when opened will release the end of the latch from the end of the lever. It is obvious that as long as the endof the lever C is held down by this latch the doors are locked shut. All, there- .fore, that is necessary to unlock and open both doors is to push the knob d to the right. This unlatchesthe lever, pushes the door A, swings up the lever, and consequently causes both doors to open.
One of the particular advantages of this structure lies in the fact that the synchronizing device can be readily adapted for use with a greater number of sliding parts to the door than that herein shown by merely providing guideways on eachsliding door and corre sponding rollers on the lever.
WhileI have described-in detail the construction shown in the drawings, I do not wish to limit myself to the specific form herein set forth Many variations of the details of construction would at once occur to any ordinary mechanic.
A I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a suitable Wall having a doorway and a plurality of doors adapted to close the doorway and sliding one behind the other to openthe same, of a pivot upon one of said parts and substantially vertical guideways upon each of the other parts and alever fulcrumedupon said pivot and in running engagement with said guideways, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a suitable wall having a doorway and a plurality of doors adapted to close the doorway and slidable one behind the other to open the same, of a pivot upon one of the extreme parts, substantially vertical guides upon each of the other parts and a lever fulcrumed at one end upon said pivot and in running engagement with said guides, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a suitable inclosure having a doorway and a plurality of doors adapted to close the doorway and slidable one behind the other to open the same, of a pivot upon said inclosure near the bottom line of said doors, substantially vertical guides upon each of the doors and a lever fulcrumed upon said pivot and having a running engagement with each of said guides, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a suitable wall having a doorway and a plurality of doors, adapted to close the doorway and slidable one behind the other to open the same, of a lever fulcrumed on the floor, guideways on each of the doors, and rollers journaled on said lever running in said guideways.
5. The combination with a suitable Wall having a doorway and a plurality of doors, adapted to close the doorway and slidable onebehind the other to open the same, of a lever fulcrunied on the floor and in running engagement with each of the doors, and means for locking the end of the lever in place to lock the doors.
6. The combination with a suitable wall having a doorway and a plurality of doors, adapted to close the doorway, and slidable one behind the other to open the same, of a lever fulcrumed on the floor and in running engagement with each of the doors, and a latch adapted to fix the position of the free end of the lever to lock the doors.
7. The combination with a suitable wall having a doorway and a plurality of doors, adapted to close the doorway, and slidable one behind the other to open the same, of a lever fulcrumed on the floor and in running engagement with each of the doors, a latch adapted to fix the position of the free end of the lever to latch the doors, and a handle on said latch so positioned that when pushed in the direction in which the doors slide, the latch will release the lever.
