BOTTLE-STOPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,814, dated March 17, 1903.

Be it known that 1, MICHAEL JOSEPH OoN- ROY, a citizen of the United States of America, and aresident of Wellsburg,county of Brooke, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in :0 bottle-stoppers; and it consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be fully described.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective bottle-stopper, l 5 the same being especially adapted for closing bottles the contents of which are not all to be removed at one time-r-that is, in other words, my invention provides a stopper for bottles which may be easily withdrawn and again replaced. p

My invention is-specially adapted for closing bottles containing gaseous fluids, such as beer, since it is not necessary to use a screw, puller, or like device to remove it.

In describing my invention in detail reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention, showing the same as it appears when inserted in the neck of a bottle, the said bottle being also shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the spring. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. L is a top plan view of the same.

Referring to said drawings,in which like reference-numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 2 is the body of a hollow flexible rubber cup or nipple adapted to be inserted in the neck 1 of a bottle. About the mouth of said cup 2, on the outer side thereof, is an integral rim or flange 3, adapted to rest on the top of the neck of the bottle to prevent the said cup from being forced too they will readily yield to pressure. vsaid cup 2 I provide a plain coil-sprin g 5,which far into said neck. The side walls of said cup are made thin and are very flexible, so that WVithin is adapted to force the side Walls of said cup outward against the neck of the bottle to form an effective closure therefor. Said spring 5 is made of such a width that when placed in position the upper edge thereof projects above the mouth of the cup, thus rendering it easy to grasp with the fingers when it is desired to remove the stopper from the bottle.

When it is desired to insert my invention in a bottle, the cup or nipple 2 is first inserted in the usual way. Then the spring may be grasped around its outer edge with a pair of pliers or tongs, and by squeezing the sides thereof together the same is reduced to such a size as to permit of its insertion in the mouth of the neck 1. When the spring has been forced into the hollow of the cup and is re leased, the thin flexible walls of the cup will be forced outward against the neck. When it is desired to remove the stopper from the bottle, pressure applied on opposite sides of the projecting spring will release said spring, when it may be easily withdrawn. The spring being withdrawn, the cup or nipple may also be easily removed with the fingers.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bottle-stopper comprising a hollow flexiblerubber cup, an outer rim or flange about the mouth of said cup, and a coil-spring situated within said cup, substantially as and for the purposes set forth and described.
