NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,162, dated May 26, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. HARGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of 'San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a stopping means for the necks of bottles and similar vessels which may be applied or inserted in the neck of the bottle after it has been filled and which will allow the contents of the vide a bottle 1, having a neck 2 with a contracted portion 3 at the outlet from the neck 2 into the bottle proper, l. A plug 4, prefer ably of glass, is permanently located in the neck 2 and is provided with a slot 10, in which is inserted a piece of cork 5, exactly filling the slot 10 and slightly protruding therefrom.

The plug 4 is vertically traversed by a vent 6, suitably located thereon, and by a curved outlet 7, also suitably located thereon.

A glass ball-valve 8 of suitable size fits in the contracted portion of the neck 3 just above the outlet 11 between the contracted portion 3 of the neck 2 and the bottle proper, 1.

The neck of the bottle at its top has inserted therein any ordinary cork or stopple 9.

In operating in accordance with my invention I proceed as follows: The bottle is first filled, as described, after which the ball-valve Sis dropped into position. The glass stopper 4,w'ith the piece of cork 5 arranged in its slot or recess 10 and protruding slightly beyond its side, is then forced into the neck 2, when by reason of the cork being compressed between the stopper 4 and the neck the stopper will be securely held in the neck. The stopple 9 is then inserted in the neck. In removing the contents from the bottle the stopple9 is removed and the bottle inverted, which will cause the ball-Valve 3 to fall upon the plug 4and permit the liquid to pass out wardlythrough the curved outlet 7 of the plug 4, the necessary air passing into the bottle through the vent 6.

As it will be practically impossible to remove the plug 4 by reason of the piece 5 of cork inserted in the slot 10, it will be seen that it will be impossible to refill the bottle proper, 1, as no liquid can pass the glass ballvalve 8 at the outlet 11. In practice the space between the top of the ball 8 and the plug 4 is limited sufficiently to simply allow of the escape of the liquid.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described non-refillable'bottle consisting essentially of a bottle proper, a neck having a contracted portion 3, a valve arranged in the neck above said contracted portion, a plug 4 formed of one piece of material arranged in the neck above said valve, and having one or more passages in its side connecting the portions of the neck below and above it, and also having the vertical, oblong recess 10 in its side, a piece of cork arranged in said recess of theplug and compressed between the plug and the neck, and a stopple removably arranged in thegneck above the plug.
