FRANK BOIVER, OF METIIUEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
SASH ADJUSTER AND LOCKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 722,079, dated March 3, 1903.
Application filed October 13, 1902. Serial No. 127,070. (No model.)
f0 all whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BoWER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Methuen, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusettsmave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Adjusters and Looking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window-sash adjusters and locking devices for windows of the kind termed easements or French windows, in which the sash is hinged upon one of its vertical edges, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a front elevation of the invention shown as applied to a window-sash of the kind above mentioned, showing the window closed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the window-sash swung open. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly shown in section, of my improved window-sash adjuster and locking device. Fig. 5 is a detail top plan view of the socket secured to the window-sill, and Fig. 6 is a detail bottom plan view of the head pivotally connected to said socket.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the windowsill, B B the uprights of the window-frame, and C the window-sash, of a casement or French window pivoted on one of its vertical edges at D, as usual in devices of this kind.
My improved sash adjuster and locking device consists of a socket E, secured in a suitable manner to the sill A inside of the window-sash, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. To said socket E is pivotally connected a head F by means of a spindle f, preferably made integral with said head and journaled in a Vertical perforation in said socket, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. On the under side of said head F are made a series of projections f f, adapted to interlock with corresponding recesses e c in the upper end of the socket E, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. In the underside of the socket E is made a recess E, in which is located a yielding coiled spring G, the upper end of which rests against the upper end of the recess E in Fig. 4. To the lower screwthreaded end of the spindle f is adjustably secured a nut H, as shown in Fig. 4, which serves to yieldingly connect the head F to the socket E. Preferably integral with the head F is made a rod I, the free end of which is pivotally connected at 7a to a link K, the other end of which is pivotally connected at Z to a bracket or bearing L, secured to the inside of the sash O, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
The operation is as follows: When the window is closed, the projections f on the head F are held interlocked with the recesses e in the upper end of the stationary socket E by the influence of the coiled spring G, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. If it is desired to open the window, it is only necessary to raise the rod I and head F sufficiently to disengage the pro jectionsf from the recesses c in the socket E, when the window-sash 0 maybe readily swung outward more or less, as may be desired, and locked in such desired position simply by releasing the upward pressure on the rod I, when the spring G will cause the projections f to interlock with the recesses e in the upper end of the socket E, thus causing the Window to be held into the desired open or partially-open position until it is desired to close the same, which is done by simply raising the rod I and head F against the influence of the spring G sufficiently to cause a disengagement of the projectionsf from the recesses 6, when the window may be partially or wholly closed and held in such desired position by releasing the hold on the rod I, when the pro jections f will be caused to interlock with the recesses e by the action of the spring G, as hereinabove described.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- The herein-described window-sash and adjustable locking device, consisting, in combination a socket adapted to be secured to the window-sill inside of the window, a rod having ahead at its inner end provided with a pivot extending into the socket through the upper side thereof, the inside of the socket having a bore of greater diameter than that in which the pivot works, a nut threaded onto the lower end of the pivot and fitted in the connected to said rod and adapted to be likeenlarged bore, a spring in said enlarged bore Wise connected to the window-sash. :0 bearing against the upper end thereof and In testimony whereof I have affixed my sigalso against said nut, a plurality of projecnature in presence of two Witnesses.
