,D-EIVICE FOR RA lSlNG OR LOWERiNG vvmoows.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 377,457,6lated February 7, 18 88. 7
Application filed August 13, 1885. Serial No. 174,343. (No model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EHORNE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Decaraising or lowering of window-sashes, more particularly the upper one; and my object is to provide the sash with apparatus for this purpose, which maybe conveniently manipulated, and at the same time shall notinterfere at all with the movement of the sash.- Iatt-ain these objects by the inechanismsillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure Us a front elevation of. the invention as applied to a window; and Fig. 2, aside elevation of the same, partly in section, in the line 00 y, Fig. 1. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
A isa bracket secured to the side and top rails on theinner edges in the corner of the sash and flush with or below the face thereof.
B is a rod extending along the inner edge of the sash and attached by a. rivet, O, to the bracket A, and allowing the rod B to swing in a plane with the glass F, as shown by the dotted lines D, giving room for a hand to grasp the rod B and'operate it without inconvenienee from the sash.
A difi'erent bracket and attachment, but for the same purpose and-on the same principle, is shown in the drawings, and for convenience in illustrating is applied to the lower sash.
E e are the side'and top bars of the sash.
as shown by the dotted lines Din Fig. 1. i
thesash in the inanneralread y described. The bracket A has a-hollow or cupped receptacle,"
The rod B has aloop orsolid head, '0', by which it is retained in the bracketand allowed to movein a plane with the glass,
The object attained by the illustrated device may also be attainedby passing a nail, screw, I H 7 or screw-eye through a hole in the rod B, the
hole in the rod being large enough to allow the rod tobe swung from the sash and operated as' heretofore described; but I have chosen the styles shown as best illustrating the invention. I am aware that it isnot altogether new .to raise a window by means of a rod attached to the sash; but there is no device known to me wherein the oonstructioni'and arrangement of theparts are such as to admit of the lower sash being raised to its full height, or the upper one lowered-to the bottom, as in my invention.
I therefore claim as my invention' In adevice for raising and lowering windowsashes, the combination of the sash and a rod pivotally connected with the top rail thereof and flnsh wither below its face, whereby the rod may be swung sidewise to allow the hand A is abracket attached to the inner edge of having a hole, as shown, through which the .rod B passes.
to grasp i't, and the sash maybe raised or lowered its entire length without interfering with the other one, substantially as'described.
WILLIAM EQ 'HORNE.
