Description
No. 729,717. PATENTED JUN E 2.1903,
H. R. BEASLEY.
DRAWING GOMPASSES.
APPLIOATIO N FILED APR. 24' 1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented June 2, 1903.
PATENT 'OFFICE.
DRAWING-COMPASSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,717, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed April 24, 1902. Serial No. 104,541. (No modeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HEDLEY ROBERT BEAS-.
LEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Stroud Green, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drawing- Oompasses, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 4,612, bearing date February 24, 1902,) of which thefollowingis a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawing-compasses, and has for its object to provide an article of this class which shall be simple and inexpensive of manufacture and durable in use, while a further object is the provision of a pair of compasses which can be carried safely in the pocket.
In order that this my said invention may be the more readily understood and carried into practical effect, reference is hereby made to the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings, wherein Figure l is an elevational view of a pair of compasses constructedin accordance with my invention.- Fig. 2 is asimilar view, on an enlarged scale, of the lower end of one of the legs thereof. Fig. 3 is also an elevational view illustrating a slight modification of my invention, while Fig. 4 is an elevational view, partly in section, of a detail of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever occurring, 0b designates the upper end of a pair of compasses, the lower ends Z; of the legs of which are constructed of hollow cylindrical form, such lower ends being provided with lengthwise slots 1), from which side slots 6 proceed. These side slots b may be either cut obliquely, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2, or they may proceed from the lengthwise slot Z) in a horizontaldirection, in which case an upward termination 11 would be provided, as shown in Fig. 3. These side slots serve as locks for pins 0', carried by sliding collars c. The sliding collars o are arranged 'to serve as carriers for a needle-point d in the material in the well-known manner.
It is obvious that in place of the lead-pea cil e a second needle-point or a pen may be provided.
It will be readily understood that by turning the sliding collars 0 into position with the pins 0 in the lengthwise slots 1) the needle (1 and the pencil e, for instance, may be adj usted by moving the said collars c longitudinally of the legs Z) and turning the pins 0' into the desired side slots b while when desirable the needle and pencil, for instance, may be arranged to lie entirely within the hollow cylindrical ends 6 of the legs, thus protecting their points.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture drawing-compasses, the lower ends of the legs of which,
are constructedof hollow cylindrical form,
each of which cylindrical portions is provided with a lengthwise slot, from which a number of side slots proceed, in combination with carriers for a needle-point and a pencil, the slid ing collars of the said carriers, having in wardly-projecting pins, arranged to travel in the lengthwise slot and be turned into any of the side slots, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore described and shown.
