PATENT OFFIGE.
MEMO RY-JOGGlERt SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,358, dated May 19, 1903.
. Application filed February 25,1903. Serial No. 145,040. QNo model.)
- Bardstown, in the county of Nelson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Memory-Jogger, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device which may be properly designated a reminding device or memory-jogger, the said device comprising in its construction atab ortablet upon which memoranda of various kinds may be inscribed and afterward erased and means for attaching such tab or tablet toa garment of the wearer where it may be conspicuously worn until the duties to which attention is directed by the memoranda have been performed, when the said tab or tablet may be placed or attached in a position'where it will be non-obtrusive and unnoticeable.
The article which forms the subject of my invention is not in any sense a mere memorandum-tablet upon which notes and memoranda for future reference may be inscribed. Its function is perfectly described by the title memory-jogger, it being specially intended for the use of those who, having a multitude of duties to perform, may require to be specially reminded of some duty of special importance, the desired result being accomplished by exposing the tab or tablet which forms a part of my invention in a position where it will be constantly and conspicuously noticeable and which will serve as a constant reminder until the special duty to which attention is at the time being directed has beenperformed.
My invention may assume a variety of forms of equal convenience and usefulness. In the present specification I have selected a few of what I deem to be the most convenient and useful modes of construction, as will be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims. r
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating a preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the attaching means in a different position and showing also in place of a single tab a tablet composed of a plurality of leaves. Fig.
4 is a perspective view illustrating a modifi cation. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the base-plate which forms one member of the clamping or attaching device used in this modification. Fig. 6 is--a longitudinal sec tional view of the device illustrated in said modification. Fig. 7 is asectional view taken on the line 7 7 in Fig. 6.
Corresponding parts inthe several figures are indicated by similar num'erals of reference.
tion I employ a tab or tablet which may consist of a single leaf, asshown in Figs. 1 and 2, or of a plurality of leaves, as shown in Fig. 3, said leaf or leaves being in either case designated 1. v I
2 designates a suitably-constructed springclamp, one of the handle members of which is pivotally connected with the leaf or leaves 1 by means of a riveting device, which may properly consist of an ordinary eyelet, (shown at 3,) said eyelet piercing the handle member 4: of the spring:clamp 2, near the end thereof, and likewise engaging the leaf or leaves near their upper edge or edges. It will thus be seen I that in either form of construction the clamping device has pivotal connection with the tab or tablet, so that it may be turned to a position in'which it shall lie adjacent to said tablet, as
shown in Fig. 3, or extend from the upper,
edge of the same, as will be seen in Fig. 2, whichever may be deemed preferable for the convenient attachment of the device to a garment of the wearer. Usually when the device is not to be exposed conspicuously the clamp is turned to the position shown in Fig. 3, when it may be conveniently connected, for instance, with the rear side of the coatlapel. When the device is to be conspicuously exposed, its position may be reversed to the front side of the lapel, and it may then be preferable to turn the clamp to the position shown in Fig. 2 in order thatthe conspicuity of the device may be more pronounced.
The leaf or leaves of the tablet may be made of any suitable material from which pencilmarks may be readily erased, such as suitably-prepared paper, ivory, celluloid, or the like. It will be obvious that when a plurality of leaves are used they will be pivotally connected by the same rivet which connects the In the preferredconstruction of my invenleaf or leaves with the clamp or attaching device.
In Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 I have illustrated a modified construction of myimproved device, in which one of the side members 7 of the spring clamp or clasp is extended and bent, as shown at 8, so as to form a base-plate 9, which may be suitably prepared, as by painting or enameling, to enable it to be written upon and the written marks to be afterward erased. In this form also one or more additional leaves, as 10, may be connected with the base-plate by means of a rivet or eyelet 11, which will enable said leaves to be spread apart from each other for the purpose of inscribing them, as will be readily understood.
It is obvious that my invention is susceptible of a variety of modifications which have not been herein shown or described; but I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise forms herein shown, but reserve the right to any changes and modifications within the scope of my invention.
I am aware that tags have been made prior to niyinvention with attaching devices whereby they may be attached in various positions. I am also aware that memorandum-tablets constructed of leaves pivotally connected, as
by means of a rivet or eyelet, are well known and have long been in public use. I am also aware that spring-clamps have been provided with hooks upon which tags have been detachably supported. Such devices I do not claim.
Having, thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a device of the class described, a spring-clamp, a memorandum-leaf and an eyelet pivotally connecting said leaf and one of the handle members of the spring-clamp which may be thus adjusted to a position adjacent to or extending from the upper edge of said leaf.
2. In a device of the class described, a spring-clamp, a memorandum-leaf and an eyelet pivotally connecting said leaf and one of the handle members of the spring-clamp, one member of the latter being extended to form a base-plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALOYSIUS G. BLINCOE.
