PATENTEE APE. 7,1903;r
No. 724,532. y

EENGE LIETEEl v APPLICATION FILED JULY 24, 1902 No MODEL.
* UNITED STATES` PATENT OFFICE.
BROOKS BATDORFF, OFDELTA, OI-IIO.
FENcE-LiFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,532, dated April 7, 1903.
Application filed July Z4, 1902.
To all whom it may concern: v i
Be it known that I, BROOKS BATDORFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Fence-Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved fence-lifter adapted for use in the construction of a wire fence to support the fence fabric while the same is being stretched between and secured to the posts; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence-lifter embodying my improvements, showing the same in operative position with reference to a fence when the same is in process of construction.
Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the same on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 2 and partly in section.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a pair of bars 1 2 of suitable length and dimeusions, one of which is longer than the other, so that when the lower ends of the said bars are on the ground with the said bars astride of a fence fabric, the said bars will lie at different inclinations and at dierent angles with respect to the fence fabric. Each bar has a spur 3 at its lower end, adapted to enter the ground, and the said spurs prevent the bars from slipping. The said bars are pivotally connected together near their upper ends by a bolt 4. Thereby the bars are adapted to be crossed and to be disposed astride of a fence fabric while the same is in process of being stretched between and secured to the post. Above the pivot-bolt on the inner opposing sides of the bars are notches 5, adapted to engage the upper wire of the fence fabric to support the latter and' prevent it from dragging or lying on the ground or `from sagging to such an extent as to come in contact with the ground. In practice the bars 1 2 are preferably made of wood, and their upper ends are sheathed. with metallic straps 6, the said straps extending into the notches 5 and preventing wear of the bars. Preferably, also, the lower ends of the bars are shod with serial No. 116,865. no model.)
metallic straps 7, and they are'also provided on opposite sides with reinforce metallic plates S, through which the pivot-bolt 4 extends, the said straps 6 7 and the said reinforce metallic plates being secured to the said bars by means of screws.
On the pivot-bolt, at a point between the bars 1 2, is pivoted the upper end of a hanger 9. The same is here shown as a metallic strap or flat bar provided in one side with bayonetslots 10, adapted for the engagement of the Wires next below the upper running-wire of the fence fabric, so that a plurality of the runner-wires of the fence frabric may be engaged by my improved fence-lifter to prevent too great a stress being exerted on any one of the runner-Wires.
When my improved fence-lifter is not in use, the bars 1 2 and the hanger 9 may be folded or closed together to dispose the fencelifter very compactly and enable it to be readily stored or carried about.
-My improved fence-lifter is especially useful in the construction of fences which eX- tend over hilltops or over uneven ground or ground which is obstructed by stumps, stones, or the like. In practice a single fencelifter or more than one may be used during the construction of the fence, according to the length of the reaches between the posts or between the anchor-post and the stretcherpost. Usually where the reach is twenty rods in length one fence-lifter will suffice. Two
would be employed where the stretches are v forty rods in length, and so on.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction and combination of devices herein shown and described, as modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a-'portable temporary fence-lifter, the combination with a pair of bars of unequal length crossed and pivoted together near their upper'ends and having their inner adjacent faces notched above the pivot for engaging the top wire of the fabric, of a hanger mounted on the pivot which connects the my own I have hereto afxed mysignaturein bars and extending below the same I said the presence of two. Witnesses.
hanofer being notched for the en'afement of otheor Wires of the fabric, the botatornl of each BROOKS LATDORFF' 5 notch being below the entrance thereto, to Witnesses: i
prevent the accidental escape of the wire. J. Q. BATDORFF,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as SAMUEL GEHING.
