UNIT D STATES PATENT. QFFICE,
WILLIAM M. MOKAY, or WILMOT, MICHIGAN.
STUMP-PULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,765, dated November 16,1886.
Application tiled June 1, 1886. Serial No. 203,787. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. MoKAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilmot, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Stump-Pullers; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which v Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved stump-puller attached to a stump. Fig. 2 is a top view of the sameas It would appear'if stretched out upon the ground, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lower end of one Like letters of reference in the three figures.
My invention has relation to stump-pullers; and it consists'in the improved construction indicate like parts and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents two wooden poles used as uprights, the upper ends of which are formed at an angle to the main part of the poles, and have bolt-holes cut through them; B, an iron rod,
having an eye formed at its upper end and a hook at its lower end; 0, a draft-rod provided at its lower end with means for attaching a team to it, and at its upper end with curved strips of iron D, secured to the sides thereof, and provided at their outer ends with boltholes; E, a bolt for securing together the poles, the iron rod, and the draft-rod, the iron rod being secured by its eye end between the poles, and the poles between the ends of the strips D, which strips give to the draft-rod a bifurcated upper end.
The poles have an increasing taper from their crooked upper ends to their lower ends, which are made convex to allow them to rock on their foundation during the pullingoperation, and which have recesses F formed in the center of the convex surface. (See Fig. 3.)
If the ground is soft, a boat, G,with a spur,
H, in its center, is placed under the end of a lifting strain is exerted upon the stump.
Then after the poles pass the vertical position the stump is pulled over onto its side.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a stump-puller, the combination of two uprights, a connecting-bolt passing through their tops, a hook and chain suspended from the bolt, and a draft-rod, the lower end of which is provided with means for attaching a team to it, and having curved strips secured to its upper end, the outer ends'of said strips being mounted upon the connecting-bolt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
WILL IAM'M. McKAY.
Witnesses:
