UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
STEPHEN M. MORSE, OF PIGEONOOVE, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,567, dated November 4, 1902. Application filed February 20, 1902- Serial No. 94,971. (l lo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN M. MORSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pigeoncove, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door-latches; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, whereby a bell is rung whenever the latch is operated.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of a portion of. a door provided with a latch and a bell according to this invention; a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a side View, of the same.
A is a portion of a door.
B is the frame of the latch.
O is the spring-bolt of the latch, and D is the operating-spindleof the latch, which latter is a spring-operated latch of any approved construction.
E is a bell secured to the door and provided with a hammer e. The hammer c has a spring-shank e, which'is secured to the spin dle D. F is an arm which is secured to the spindle D.
G is a bracket which is secured to the door A, and g is a handle which is pivoted to the bracket G by apin g. The handle 9 is movable in a vertical plane, and his an arm which projects from the handle g and engages with a hole in the free end portion of the arm F.
H is the knob on the spindle D on the opposite side of the door from the handle g.
When the handle 9 is operated to retract the bolt of the spring-latch, the hammer is raised, and when the handle g is let go the hammer strikes the bell, so that attention is called to the fact that the door has been opened.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, withaspring-operated door-latch having a handle on one end of its operating-spindle, of an arm secured on the other end of the said spindle, a bell secured to the door, a belLhammer carried by the said spindle, and an auxiliary handle supported by the door and operatively connected with the said arm, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a spring-operated door-latch, and its operating-spindle; of a bell secured to the door, a bell-hammer carried by the said spindle, an arm secured to the said spindle, a bracket secured to the door, a handle pivoted to the said bracket, and an arm projecting from the said handle and opera tively connected with the aforesaid arm, sub stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN M. MORSE.
