, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES .LLYONS, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO HENRY J. WEBER AND JOSEPH WEBER, OF SAME PLACE.
BU RGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,614, dated April 24, 1 894.
Application filed January 2, 1 894. Serial No. 495,305. (No model.)
i f 111 Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure .1 is .a side elevation showing the a side elevation of the notched segment of the device to be applied to the shank of the door knob. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the device applied to the jamb of a window. Fig. 4. is a bottom plan view of the device applied to a door, parts being broken away to more clearly show its construction. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the notched segment to be applied to the shank of the door knob. Fig. 6 is a side view of a circular notched wheel or disk to be used on the shank of the door knob in place of the notched segment, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a toothed rack to be applied to a window sash when the device is applied to a window.
This invention relates to certain improvements in burglar alarms of the class wherein the alarm device is connected with the shank of the knob of an ordinary door, and designed to be operated to sound an alarm when the knob is turned which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings P represents an attaching plate designed to be attached to the side of the door by means of screws, and at a short distance from the shank K of the door knob 13. Gis an alarm bell attached to said plate 1? by means of a post 11 F is a lever pivotally attached at q" to said plate. S is a spring having one end secured to said plate, and having its middle portion pass through the end of the lever F, the extending end thereof forming the striker arm J. E is a lever pivotally attached to said plate at V near the inner end of lever F, and near enough thereto to be in contact therewith through the resiliency of spring S. 1
Ais a segment plate having its hub sleeved Fig. 2 is I on the shank K of the door knob B, and secured thereon by means of a set screw X. The periphery of said segment is provided with notches or teeth 72, which are arranged to engage the outer extending end of the lever E for tripping the same as said segment is oscillated in either direction by means of turning the door knob B within the limits of the slot a in said segment, through which post 6 extends to limit such rotation or oscillation, and prevent lateral movement of said segment and disengagement from the trip lever E. The hub of the segment A, may be open at one side as shown in Fig. 2 to admit the shank of the door knob without having to remove the knob, or it may be circular as shown in Fig. 5.
It is intended that the device may be applied to a window as well as to a door, as shown in Fig. 3. In such case the plate P may be attached to the jamb or casingN of the window, and the window sash be provided with a toothed rack H for engaging and tripping the lever E.
When it is desired to use the device as an ordinary door bell where the door knob and its shank revolves, the segment A may be circular as shown in Fig. 5.
In operation when the device is applied to a door as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the teeth 7?. on the segment A, successively engage and trip the outer end of lever E, and thereby because of its engagement with lever F cause it to oscillate and thereby cause the striker W, to ring the bell continuously as the knob is turned in either direction. When applied to a window the bell will ring as the window is moved up or down so long as the trip leverE is in contact with the toothed rack 1-1.
When it is desired to detach the alarm device from the shank of the door knob, so it may not be operated to sound an alarm, the trip lever E may be turned to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, where it will be held by the leverFout of contactwith the notched segment, or rack if used on a window.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a burglar alarm the combination of the attaching plate P carrying a bell G, lever F pivotally connected to said plate, spring S for connecting the rear end of said lever-with said plate, and terminating in a striker-arm" J, trip lever E pivotally connected to saidstriker arm on its outer end, a trip lever pivotallyconnected to said plate parallel with 15 and in contact with said striker-lever, aspring for preserving the contact of said levers, and
,a notched segmentor wheel arranged on the door knob shank for tripping said trip lever all arranged to operate substantially asand 20 for the purpose setforth,
CHARLES J; LYONS.
