To ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. JACKSON, of Lawrenceville, in the county of Allegheny, andState of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Process for Converting Iron Articles into Steel; andl do hereby declare. that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
I take ninety-five (95) parts of wood charcoal, two,(2) parts of common soda, and one (1) part of potash,
and two parts of rock-salt. I dissolve the soda, and potash, and rock-salt in suflicieut water to hold these three ingredients in solution This solution I mix most thoroughly with the charcoal until every particle of -the charcoal (which is pulverized) has become charged with the solution. I then place the article I'wish to convert, into a converting-furnace, and cover it with the prepared charcoal, after which I seal up the furnace and apply heat for two or three days, after which I remove the article from the furnace. The converting process will be in proportion to the heat applied to the article or articles sealed up in the furnace.
Having thus describedthe nature and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention, is The use of the ingredients herein named, when compounded and used in the manner and in about the pooportions herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
