UNITED STATES y PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM B. WILLIAMSON, OF MELVERN, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO W. E. MYERS, OF POWHAT'IAN, KANSAS.
STAY FOR BUGGY-BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,769, dated July 15, 1902.
Application filed November 2, 1901. Serial No. 80,912. [No modehl To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. WILLIAM- SON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Melvern', in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Stay for Bugg T-Beds, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to stays for buggy or wagon beds or boxes and the like; and the ob- Io ject of the same is to provide a strong and durable device of this ,class having alight structure capable of reinforcing the corner and other joints of a Wagon or buggy bed or box and requiring but a comparatively few I5 fastening devices to hold itrmly iixed in po sition. A
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and zo claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l' is a perspective View of a portion of a buggy-boot, showing the improved form of stay applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the stay and boot at the corner. Fig. 3 is an elevation of amodied form of the improved device.
Similar numerals of reference are employedhas sides 2 arranged at an angle to each other.
corresponding to that of the portion of'the bed, boot, or Wagon-box corner or joint to which it is applied. The sides have opposite right-angular top and bottom end plates or members 3 continuous therewith and extending equally with the said sides to form partial end closures for the latter. The stay is pref- 40 erably formed of metal having a thickness about equal to that of sheet-iron orlike sheet metal, and in view of the lightness of aluminium it will be used ,for the'purpose. Other suitable thin material may be used, however, and irrespective of the kind of material of which the stayis composed the angular ends or members 3 will form a part thereof and performthe advantageous function of strengthening the sides,f'as well as means for 5o receiving fastening devices, as shown by Fig. 2, and also conjunctively provide with the adjacent portions of the sides complete corner coverings or protectors. When the stay is vertically arranged or so disposed that the ends or members 3 t over the opposite ter- 55 body structures aside from the posts mentioned.
At opposite terminals of the sides 2 and at intermediate points thereof transverse bracing-ribs 4 are located and integral with the 7o material of said sides, the said ribs meeting at the angle of the sides and serving to stiien the stay and render it stronger Without resorting to a cumbersome construction. The opposite end ribs form a part of the ends or members 8 where they connect Withthe sides 2 andv thickenthematerialat said points, so as to resist breakingat the corners.
The modified form ofthe device Vshown by Fig. 3 is similar in all general'features of con- 8o struction tothe stay just described, and the difference of construetionresides in the ornamental, characteroffthe braces 5, applied to the outer surfaces of the sides 2 and integral With the latter, the metal in this construction beingcut awayat intervals to lighten the structure, and terminals, as at 6, extend completely to the edges of the said sides. The edges of the sides may be also suitably ornamented or given apleasing conguration, 9o and changes inthe size, surface form, and proportions-may be resorted to Without departing from-the principle of the invention.
. Havingthusdescribed the invention, what is olaimedas new isl. In a device of the class described, the combination with a vehicle-body having a corner-post, of a stay comprising exterior sides varranged at right angles to each other to fit the corner of thevehicle-bod'y and extending rco from the top to the bottom oi' the same and provided with exterior bracing devices formed integral with the sides, the inwardly-extending integral rectangular top and bottom plates entirely covering the space between the sides and connecting the latter and arranged on the corner-post and beneath the bottom of the sill of the vehicle-body and provided with perfor-ations, and vertical fastening devices passing through the perfor-ations and embedded in the corner-post, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a vehiclebody having a corner-post, of a stay comprising the verticallydisposed exterior sides conforming to the configuration of the corner of the vehicle-body and extending from the top to the bottom of
