iSPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,260, dated May 4, 1886. Application filed April 5, 1886. Serial No.197,827. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN MAXWELL, of Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Burial Caskets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to burial-casket lids having two top openings for the reception of either removable glasses or supplemental lids, so that either end thereof may be used for the head of the casket; and the invention has special reference to lids of caskets composed of sheet metal. Y

The object of thcinvcution is to thoroughly brace such lids across the center, so as to compensate for the weakening incident to the aforesaid openings; and to that end the invention consists in a novel construction of the cross-tie between the openings in the lid, and also in the combination,with said cross-tie, of braces secured to the under side of the lid, as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of a metallic burial-casket lid embodying' my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of said lid. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line as m, Fig. 1, including the wooden casket iuclosing the metallic casket; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the lid on line 3 y, Fig. 2.

A represents the lid of the metallic casket, said lid being formed of sheet metal and with a raised top and sloping sides and ends, as shown at a a. with two openings, 0 0-one at each endand around the edges of said openings are formed rabbets, to serve as seats for panes of glass which close the openings.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A metallic burial-casket lid formed with top openings at both ends, and with an intermediate crosstie rc-enforced by ribs struck up from said cross-tie and extending lengthwise thcreof, substantially as described and shown.

2. A metallic burial-casket lid formed with a raised top and sloping sides and ends, and with openings in both ends of said top and a cross-tie between said openings re-en forced by braces secured to the under side of the lid and extending from the sides to the cross-tie, substantially as set forth and shown.

3. A metallic burial-caslmt lid formed with a raised top and sloping sides and ends and openings in both ends of said top, and acrosstie re-enforced by ribs struck up from said cross-tie and by braces secured to the under side of the lid and extending from the sides thereof to the crosstie, substantially as described and shown.
