LEVI SWOVERLAND, or wAUPEooNe, INDIANA.
FENCE-POST ANCHOR.
SPECIFICATION. forming part of Letters Patent 1%. 692,731, dated February 4, 19oz. Application filed August 3, 1901- Serial No. 70,741- (No modelJ To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'LEVI SWOVERLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wan pecong, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Post Anchors; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fence construction, and more particularly to a combination and construction of parts necessary to produce a reliably efficient fence-post, the parts of which may be cheaply constructed and readily assembled in operative combination.
The object of my invention is to provide a post which will prove of simple and cheap construction combined withdnrability orpermanence of character; and these results are obtained by means of the construction set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicha Figure 1 illustrates my invention as applied to use upon an ordinary Wire fence. Fig. 2
shows the opposite side of the post from that illustrated in Fig.v 1 and also shows the preferred means of attaching a bracing or reinforcing wire or rod. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the top of the post and the clamping device designed to be slipped over the same. Fig.4 illustrates a slightly-different construction of the post proper and also of the device designed to cooperate therewith. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the complete post and clamping device partly illustrated in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of aportion of the post, showing the preferred means of securing one of the fence-wires in cooperation therewith.
For convenience of illustration and reference numerals will be employed, of which 1 indicates the body portion of the post proper, which is of any preferred length and is provided at intervals with a series of notches or recesses 2, each designed to receive a contigu ous portion of a fence-wire and hold said wire against movement after the same shall have been secured to the post by means of the clamping-wire 3. (More fully illustrated in Fig. 6.)
The post 1 is provided at its lower end with the-hook-like terminal 4, one form of which is more fully illustrated in Fig. 5 and also des ignated by the numeral 4. The hook terminal 4 is designed to afford a seat for the reception of the lower end of a suitably-shaped anchoring=stone 5, and in order to hold the stone and post in reliable operative combination I provide the clamping member 6, having the downwardly-extending hook-like terminal 7, and the collar 8, designed to loosely encircle a contiguous portion of the fence= post, it being understood that said collar is .to be provided with a suitable opening or so shaped that it will snugly encircle any form of post employed to cooperate therewith. In Fig. 5 the collar 8 is so shaped that it will re ceive the T-shaped portion of the post, said body-section being indicated by the numeral 9' and corresponding in function with the section indicated by the numeral 1 in Figs. 1, 2-, and 3.
It will be understood that the anchoring member proper, 5, may consist of a suitablyheld down by its own weight and that no setscrew, pins,- or Wedges are necessary to secure the parts in operative combination, thereby insuring that the same may be very cheaply mounted or adjusted for use.
The post may be properly braced at interpost which will reliably perform its office of sustaining the wires or boardsof a fence in position, and believing that the construction and manner of using the same have been made clear, further description is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described fence-post having the hooked terminal 4 and an adjustable clamping member comprising the parts 6, 7 and 8,
in combination with an anchoring member 5 adapted to be engaged by said member and said hooked terminal 4, all operatively combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEVI SWOVERLAND. \Vitnesses:
