METALLIC FENCE-POST.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHASE CoLvIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Charleston, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to metallic fence posts and the object of the same is to provide a metallic fence post which will be of a strong, durable construct-ion having the parts so arranged as to prevent the accumulation of water or moisture within the same and provided with one or more adjustable supporting devices to support the fence wires or any of the various attachments upon the post; and to so construct this supporting device that it can be manipulated to adjust the parts supported either longitudinally or transversely to the post; and further, to provide such a device which, when applied to fence wires, will retain the twisted ends thereof entirely within the post.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away, of a fence post embodying my invent-ion; Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional view of an end post showing in detail one of the supporting devices carried thereby; and Fig. 3 is a transverse, sectional view taken on the line 00 a" of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.

In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same as applied to an end post comprising two members spaced apart to form a slot between them. In the present in stance these members comprise angle irons 1 having their concave faces adjacent one to the other, spaced a short distance apart and arranged substantially parallel for the greater portion of their length.

Suitable means are provided for spacing the two members of the post apart, thereby providing a slot between the same to receive the fence wires and the supporting devices and which will also afford free access of air to the interior of the post and will permit water or other accumulations to escape from the interior of the post. bers of the post and through the spacing block, the bolt serving both to retain the spacing block in position and secure together the two members of the post. The two members are clamped so tightly against the spacing block as to hold the same against movement about its pivotal center but this movement of the spacing block could be prevented in other manners if desired. At the upper end of the post the spacing member is shown as comprising a bolt 4 extending between the two members of the post and provided with means on the opposite sides of the post for engaging the adjacent edges of the two members thereof and holding the same against lateral displacement. As here shown this means comprises a bolt head and an oblong washer 5 which is bent over the edges of the angle irons of the post members. A second bolt 6 extends through the two members of the post and serves to clamp the same tightly together.

The fence posts may be braced in any suitable manner, but in the present instance I have shown the fence rail 15 rigidly secured to the post and having the function of a brace.

A suitable supporting device is mounted in the slot formed between the two members of the post and is provided with means for securing thereto a part to be supported. This supporting device is of such a character that the parts supported thereby can be adjusted either vertically or horizontally relatively to the post. In the present instance the supporting device is designed especially for connecting the fence wires to the end posts and comprises a bolt 21 extending into the slot between the two members of the post and provided with a wing nut 22, the wings of which are preferably apertured and to'which is secured the end of one of the fence wires 23. In the present instance this fence wire is shown as comprising two single wires twisted together and the ends of these two wires are connected to the opposite wings of the nut 22. The nut is preferably moved to a point near the outer end of the bolt and is extended through the slot at a point adjacent to the wire to enable the wire to be secured thereto. The supportingring or nut 21 is then rotated and the nut is caused to travel along the bolt to adjust the wire relatively thereto. The bolt is preferably of a diameter slightly less than the width of. the slot between the two members of the post and is thus freely adjustable relatively to the post. After this vertical adjustment has been accomplished the bolt is rotated to exert tension on the fence wire, thus causing the head of the bolt which is preferably provided with a washer 24 to firmly engage the edges of the angle irons and thus prevent any further vertical movement of the bolt. In the present instance where the device is designed to support a fence wire the rotation of the bolt not only takes the slack out of the wire but it also moves the wing nut and the connected ends of the wire within the space between the two members of the post where they are concealed from view.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a strong, durable post which is provided with supporting devices by means of which the fence wire or other part to be supported can be firmly secured thereto and by means of which the part to be supported can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally relatively to the post. By means of this adjustment it is possible to adjust the fence wires to their proper relations after the post has been set regardless of the relative positions of the posts. Further, it will be apparent that the particular form of the device here shown enables the twisted ends of the wires to be concealed from'view and confined within the posts where they cannot catch in garments of passersby, thus making the posts particularly desirable for posts of lawn fences.

While I have illustrated one form of the device and have shown the same as supporting fence wires it will be understood that this form is chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1- 1. A fence post comprising two members rigidly connected one to the other and spaced apart to form a slot between them, a bolt loosely mounted in said slot to enable it to be adjusted vertically relatively to said post, a part carried by said bolt and engaging said members on one side of said post, and a nut mounted on said bolt between said members and having means for connecting thereto a part to be supported, whereby said part to be supported may be adjusted both verti cally and transversely to said post.

2. A fence postcomprising two angle irons arranged with their concave sides adj acent one to the other, means for spacing said angle irons apart to form a slot between the same, means for rigidly connecting said angle irons one to the other, a bolt movably mounted in said slot to enable it to be adjusted vertically relatively thereto and having its head in engagement with the outer edges of said angle irons on one side of said post, and a nut mounted on said bolt and having means for securing thereto a part to be supported, whereby said part to be sup ported may be adjusted both vertically and transversely to said post.

3. A fence post comprising two angle irons arranged with their concave sides adj acent one to the other, means for spacing said angle irons apart to form a slot between them, means for rigidly connecting said angle irons one to the other, a bolt loosely mounted in said slot to enable it to be ad justed vertically relatively to said post and having its head in engagement with the outer edges of said angle irons on one side of said post, and a wing nut mounted on said bolt within the space between said angle irons and adapted to have a fence wire connected thereto, whereby both the tension 011 said wire and its vertical position may be adjusted.
