SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,823, dated June 9, 1885.

Be it known that the undersigned, GEORGE W. KILER and CHARLES M. KILER, residents of Indianapolis,.lndiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Iron Fence-Posts, a description of which is set forth in the following specification, refer ence being made to the accompanying drawing.

Our improvement consists in attaching a post for iron fences to a solid iron base in such mannerthat the base may be set solidly in the ground and the posts, with fence-panels at tached, may be straightened into line without moving the base, the connection between the post and the base being made adjustable by' the mechsnism hereinafter described.

The drawing represents a perspective view of our device, in which bis a base, made preferably of cast-iron, having wings 1, 2, 8, and 4, the top of the base being fashioned in the shape of a knob, upon which the base may be driven into the ground. In wing 1 is formed a slot, 8, and in the opposite wing, 3, a hole, h. The post, preferably made of wrought-iron, is formed of two rods, pp, united at the top, as shown, the lower end of the rodp being bent at right angles to its length, and of such size as to move easily in the slot 8, through which the short bent end is passed and secured by means of a nut, n, suitable washers being used on either side, so that the end of the rod 1) may move easily up and down in the slot. The rod 1) of the post has a hook formed on its lower end, the end of which is inserted in the hole h of the wing 3, thus forming. a sort of hinge.

The base 12 being fixed in the ground, with the rods 19 p properly connected thereto, as above described, it is obvious that by the pressure of the hand the rod 10 may be inclined in either direction, the movement only being limited by the length of the slot 8', the hook on the other rod 1) performing the office of a hinge. If, therefore, the base should by accident or mistake be set in the ground somewhat out of line, the fence may nevertheless be straightened by means of the adjustable connection of the post with the base without disturbing the latter at all.

a is a clamp for bracing the two rods of the post more firmly about midway.

We are aware that iron bases for fenceposts are not new, and that iron posts for fences are not new, and do not broadly claim the same as our invention.

\Vhat we do claim, however, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:

1. An iron fence-post composed of the rod 1), its lower end bent and threaded to receive the nut 11, the rod p, provided with a hook on its lower end, the two rods united at the top, as shown, the clamp c, the base b, having two or more wings, one of which has the slot 8 and the one opposite it the hole h, all combined substantially as described.

2. A post formed of an iron rod, one part thereof, 19, having its end bent substantially at right angles to it, another part, 1), having its lower end formed ,into a hook, the base b, having wings on opposite sides, one of which is adapted to receive the bent end of the rod 1) in the slots, with not a, for fastening the same, the other side of the base having the hole h, for hinging the hook of the rod 29', all

combined substantially as described.
