BYRON P. MATTISON, OF WELTON, IOIVA.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,695, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed October 16, 1900. erial No. 33,277. (No model.)
To aZZ ZUh077Z/ it may concern:
Beit known that I, BYRON P. MATTISON, residing at WVelton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and novel improvement in snap-hooks.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple snap-hook having akeeper so arranged that a ring intended to be held by the snap may be readily removed.
In the accompanying drawingsl have shown in Figure 1 a side elevation of a snap-hook embodying my invention and in Fig. 2 a bottom View thereof.
The aim of my invention is more particularly to provide a snap-hook of simple construction and so arranged that a user may readily remove the ring from the same. In winter it is a great convenience for a driver to be able to remove a ring from a snap-hook without removing his mittens or gloves, and to provide a snap-hook which an operator wearing mittens can use is the aim more particularly of this invention.
My invention embodies, essentially, a snaphook comprising the loop 5, from which extends the book 1, the hook at a suitable point being provided with a seating 6, as shown, and a further depression at, within which is held the keeper, which is in the form of a tongue 2. This keeper 2 is preferably of a piece of sheet metal, as is shown, and is held by means of a pin 3. An ordinary spring has one member 4 secured to two loops 7 7, secured to the tongue, While the remaining member of the spring 4 is secured to the stem of the hook. A ring adapted to be secured to the hook will readily pass over and depress the keeper 2, while if the ring is afterward brought against the lower portion of the hook the keeper may be depressed, so that the ring may be withdrawn from the hook.
The invention is noticeable because of its extreme simplicity.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
A snap-hook comprising the loop 5 continuing to form the recurve hook 1, said hook extending in a plane at right angles to a plane passing through said loop, the seating 6 provided within the hook end 1, upon the under side, a depression upon the side between the loop 5 and hook 1, the pin 3 passing through said hook 1, within said depression, the sheetmetal tongue 2, secured to said pin 3, the loop 7, secured to said sheet-metal tongue 2, and the spring 4 held within said loop 7, winding about said pin 3, and being secured to said hook near the loop end 5, all arranged substantially as, and for the purpose set forth.
BYRON P. MATTISON.
