Min 1 STATES CHARLES EDMOND STEVENS, OF LOVELOOKS, NEVADA.
CAP FOR FUSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,586,dated May 6, 1902.
Application filed November 19,1901. Serial No. 82,909. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EDMOND STE- ,VENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lovelooks, in the county of Humboldt and described and as State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for Fuses;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in caps for fuses, and has for its object to provide a cap with means to prevent a fuse from turning or twisting andagainst accidental displacementwhile within the cap and to prevent premature explosion of the powder within the cap by too greata pressure of the fuse upon the powder.
My invention'consists'of a fuse-cap constructed substantially as herein shown and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is an elevation of. my improved cap; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, showing a fuse in position.
In carrying out my invention I construct the cap of' a shell 1 having a pointed end 2 and an opposite open end 3. The body portion of the shell next to the open end isipreferably cylindrical and has prongs or. barbs 4 out therein. Upon the interior of the shell, about midway between the ends, isan ofise't 5. In employing my device premature explolindrical sion of the powder within the cap caused by too great a pressure of the fuse upon the powder, which happens either when the fuse is pushed within the cap or when the fuse after its insertion'within the cap is twisted or turned in tamping a blast or picking out one which has failed to discharge, is avoided.
In use an explosive is placed within the cap below the ofiset 5, and then a fuse is inserted the desired distance, which, however,is limited by the offset. 7 The prongs or barbs 4 are next forced inward to engage the fuse to prevent it from turning or twisting and against accidental displacement. It is obvious that the ofiset will limit the insertion of the fuse, and thus prevent it from pressing against the powder within the cap,which would beliable to cause it to explode. The pointed end of the cap permits its ready insertion Within a blast to be discharged without first making a hole therefor.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
A cap for fuses, comprising a shell having a body portion, apointed end, an ofiset on its interior to limit the insertion of a fuse therein, and prongs struck up from said cy portion to engage a fuse, substantially as set forth. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES EDMOND STEVENS. Vitnesses:
GEo. YOUNG, JOHN H. MoOLURE.
