Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH C. MORRILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., EXEOUTRIX OF CHARLES MORRILL, DECEASED.
HAND-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,210, dated May 6, 1902. Application filed October 3, 1901. Serial N: 77,463. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'CHARLESMORRILL, deceased, late of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Punches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hand-punches, of which a full and clear de- 16 scription will be given hereinafter;
The invention consists of an interchangeable adjustable die and plunger, the adj ustment of the die being produced by means of removable washers,- all of which will be fully 1!; pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing the single figure is represented as being part in section and elevation.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through= out the drawing,- in which z'o arepresents the stock of the tool,- having integral therewith the usual gooseneck, forming the head 1) thereof. The nose 0 "of the head 6 is provided with the tap d and bore 6, the tap a being larger than the bore e, form- 25 ing as it does the shoulder 0, the latter of which is adapted to receive the die f, mounted with the removable Washer 71.. Both die and washers aforesaid are held in position by the screw jam-nut '11. The stock of the tool is provided with the plunger 70, which is held'and operated in the usual way. The forward end of the plunger is provided with the removable punch point or end Z, which is screwed into the end of the plunger is and is limited to its adjustment by means of the shoulder m, which may be made in any convenient shape. Intliis instance it is made hexagonal, so that the jaws: of a spanner may engage with the plane surfaces thereof when ad justing the punch end I to the end of the 40 plunger It. It will be obvious that when the die begins to wear and needs grinding a cer tain amount of the stock or body thereof will have been removed, thus shortening its neck, 1 as it were. In order to compensate for the 5 shortening of the die, one or more of the washers is removed, when the die will assume its proper position when adjusted. The same operation is applicable when both the punch end and die are to be ground simultaneously. It will also be obvious that dilferent sizes of dies and punch ends may be used in one and the same stock.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the support therefor of an interchangeable and adjustable die opposing shoulders on said die and support, the movable washers seated between the shoulders and jam-nut,substantially as shown and described.
2.- The combination with a hand-punch hav ing a horizontally-moving plunger and inter changeable and adjustable die of the interchangeable punch point or end, the shoulder thereon, said punch end screwed to the end of the plunger aforesaid, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at NewYork city, in the borough of 7c Manhattan and State of New York, this 26th day of September, 1901.
