REMOVABLE TRAY FOR ELEVATOR-BOOTS.

Be it known that I, JOHN M. LEMMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Trays for Elevator-Boots and I do hereby declare that the following is a f ul], clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has reference to the boots of elevators; and the object thereof is to materially improve the same, whereby the boot may be readily cleaned when changing from wheat to buckwheat or rye or for any other purpose and also enabling the boot to be kept perfectly clean, which is essential to keep out the worms and bugs that are so destructive to the bolting-cloth.

The invention consists in an elevator-boot and a removable tray and removable gates" constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a sectional elevation of the lower end of the elevator-boot, showing the lower pulley or wheel with the endless belt carrying the grain-buckets and my invention applied to the boot; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof; Fig. 3, a detail sectional view showing the removable tray applied to the usual form of boot.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the elevator-boot, and B the lower one of the usual pulleys or wheels around which passes the endless belt 0, carrying the grainbuckets D, all of which are of the ordinary construction. The boot A at its lower end has removable gates E, which form theincline side walls of the bottom or lower end of the boot and have recesses a for the thumb or finger for convenience of removing the gates when required, saidgates fitting in'grooves in the sides of the boot or retained in position in any other suitable and well-known manner; Upon the bottom of the boot rests a slidable tray F, of sheet metal or any preferred material found best adapted to the purpose, said tray having upturned sides I) and at one end a suitable handle or loop 0 for convenience of removing the tray when desired. When'the tray is in position, as shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings, the lower ends of the gates E bear thereon to hold it stationary and in position, and when the tray is to be removed for cleaningthe gates are slightly raised from frictional contact therewith, which will enable the tray to be readily removed. As a further security in holding the tray stationary suitable guide-slots d are formed in the side walls of the boot, with which engage the upper edges of the upturned sides I) of the tray, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The tray, however, may be applied to any form of boot without regard to the guide-slots or the removable gates, said tray being of any desirable size and form and constructed of any suitable material that will serve the purpose, the essential feature of the invention resting in a tray or like receptacle with upturned sides and one that may be removed from the boot for cleaning and also in the two removable gates for obtaining access to the interior of the boot for cleaning it or for other purpose and also serving the additional purpose in means for holding down the tray in place.

The tray, as will be seen, forms the supple mental bottom to the lower end of the boot, and after the elevator has run until the buck ets are empty said tray is removed and cleaned, thereby keeping the lower end of the boot in a good condition.

- Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with an elevator-boot provided with removable gates, of a removable tray which forms the bottom of the lower end of the boot, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

'2. In combination with an elevator-boot of a removable tray therefor, said tray having upturned sides and formingthe bottom of the lower end of the boot, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. In combination with an elevator-boot of a removable tray therefor, said tray having upturned sides and'engaging guide slots 01' grooves in the boot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
