Description
Patented Dec. 4, I900. H. H. TURNER.

llNTEi) STATES HARRIET HARRIS TURNER,
PATENT ()FFICE.
OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
Application filed March 22, 1900. Serial No. 9,733.
663,137, dated December 4, 1900.
(No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARRIET HARRIS TUR- NER, of Rochester, in the county ofMonroe, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cream and Finger Guards for Freezers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-letters marked thereon.
My present invention has for its object to provide a device adapted to be attached to whereby the upper end or top of the freezing-cylinder may be protected from the surrounding ice and salt, permitting its contents to be easily inspected and also serving as a guide to center the cylinder in the receptacle or pail.
To these and other ends my invention consists in certain improvements in construction and combination of parts, all as will be described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Similar reference-letters in the several figures indicate similar parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a freezer,
showing the application of device constructed in accordance with my invention. a vertical sectional view thereof.
top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the ring or guard.
Fig. 2 is In illustrating my device I have shown it as applied to a freezer of the ordinary construction, embodying an outer pail or receptacle A, in which is arranged the vertical cylinder O, having the cover D and supported at its lower end upon the central pivot or bearing E and. upon its upper end by a suitable cross-bar F, carrying suitable gearing, and an operating-shaft f, having the handle g, by means of Whichthe cylinder may be rotated, as will be understood.
Surrounding the upper end of the cylinder 0, I arrange a ring B, the lower end of which extends a short distance beneath the joint between the receptacle and its cover D, and to permit access to the latter, whereby it may be easily removed when desired, I provide upon opposite sides of the ring grooves or offsets I), of sufficient size to allow the insertion of the fingers, and by extending the material Fig. 3 is a composing the ring sufficiently to engage the inner sides of the receptacle A, I am enabled to center the ring therein. Additional wings or projections c 0, located on thesides of the ring and engaging the receptacle, also assist in securing it in position, and these, as well as the offset portions 1), may be tapered inwardly from the to toward the bottom to conform to the inclined sides of the pail or receptacle. Formed upon the lower side of one of the ofiset portions 19 is a lug or extension d, having a threaded aperture adapted to receive the threaded engaging end of a drainage-tube d. The latter projects through a suitable aperture provided in the side of the receptacle and may be of sufficient length to allow any water from the melting ice to escape into a suitable receptacle before rising high enough to reach the joint between the cream-cylinder and its cover. The drainage-tube securely engaging the lug will serve to secure the ring in position, although screws or other fastening devices may also be employed if it is desired to permanently secure it within the pail A.
The operation of my device will now be understood. The cream-cylinder 0 being positioned within the pail A and a portion of the salt and ice distributed in the space between the parts, I apply the ring or guard, sliding it over the cylinder until its upper edge is in line with the top of the pail, and secure it by inserting the drainage-tube therein and engaging the threaded aperture in the lug d. The remaining ice and salt may then be packed upon the outside of the ring, and the latter preventing it from falling upon the top D or coming in contact with the upper edge of the cylinder permits the cover to be removed and the contents easily inspected.
Devices such as I have described are simple and may be easily constructed, and they are adapted to be applied to freezers already in use. The ring also serves as a guide for the cylinder, always supporting the latter in an upright position.
I claim for my invention 1. In a freezer, the combination with an outer pail or receptacle, and an inner freezing-cylinder having the cover, of a ring supported centrally in the receptacle surrounding the upper end of the cylinder and extend- LJA ing above the top thereof andprovided with recessed portions upon its opposite sides extending beneath the said cover.
2. In a freezer, the combination with an outer pail or receptacle, and an inner freezing-cylinder having the cover, of a ring adapted to surround the upper end of the cylinder having the outwardly-extending recessed portions arranged upon opposite sides and adapted to engage the sides of the receptacle to support the ring centrall therein.
3. In a freezer, the combination with an outer pail or receptacle, and an inner freezing-cylinder having the cover, of a ring sur-.
threaded end having the tapering edges adapted to engage the Walls ofthe receptacle to support the ring centrally therein, operating devices connect ed to the cylinder and a support for said devices extending across the top of the receptacle and engaging the upper edge of the ring.
5; In a freezer, the combination with an outer pail or receptacle having the sloping sides provided with an aperture, and an inner freezing-cy1inder mounted in the receptacle, of a ring surrounding the upper end of the cylinder provided with the recessed portions upon its opposite sides having'the tapered edges engaging the sides of the receptacle, a lug or projection extending down- Wardly at the lower edges of one of the recesses having a threaded aperture adapted to register With the aperture in the side of the receptacle, and a drainage-tube having the adapted to engage therewith.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
