'ro' ALL WHoM 1T MAY eoNeERN:
Be it known that I, LUZERNE M. BOLLES, of Cooperstown, in the county of Otsego, and State of New York,
have'invented a new and improved Spring-Bed Bettoni; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in-wliich Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bedstead, with spring bottom, ready for use.
Figure 2 is a view of a portion of the bcdstead and springs, showing the manner' of arranging and attaching said springsto the bedstead. g
Figure 3 is a sectional full-size view of the device or mechanism for holding and operating the springs.
Sameletters of reference refer to like parts on each of the drawings.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing and arranging metal rods in such a manner as will form the springs for a bed-bottom, by having two rods at each end of the bedstead, secured in a suitabe device, each rod with a hook at one end, on which rests the bedbottom, iand key or wrcnch-blocks on the opposite end for turning and holding saidjrod, to give the required tension, the spring being obtained by twisting said rods; and the aforesaid rods are arranged on both ends so as to have a hook at each corner of the bedstead, on which a suitable bar rests for supporting long slats, or a frame with sucking-bottom may be used; and said springs can be made sti` or iimber, aceording tothe weight they are required to bear, by adjusting with the wrench and key-bloeks, which i'san advantage possessed by no other spring-bed.
A is the bedstead. B is tle iron which' is screwed en to the bedstead. G are metal rods, the ends of which are supported and operated in hoies made for that purpose in the castingslB. D are key-blocks secured on rods 0, for the purpose of turning said rods to the required tension. Said blocks are constructed by having two square blocks placed at opposite angles, forming anV Octagon, and at the same time having a full square side to rest on the key. E are the keys which hold theukey or wrcnchsbloeks from turning back.l F is a hook on the opposite ,end from the key-blocks on rod IC. Glare cross-bars,l of wood. H are links or loops secured on cross-bars Gr, and connect said bars to hooks'F. J represents slats, the ends of which rest and are fastened by screws ornails, or any other suitable device, on cross-bars G; and if a frame and saeking bc used, instead of slats, the links or loops H are secured to each corner ofthe frame, to connect them with hooks F.
To use my'invent-ion screw the irons B, with the rods in them, on to the bedstcad; put cross-bar G on to hooks F; put on slats J; then turn and keyitherods to the proper tension, and the bed-bottom is ready for use. p
Whatl claim as my invention, and` desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of irons B, rods O, key-blocks D, keys E, hooks F, links H, and cross-bar G', or their equivalents, with eachother, and with the bedstea-d A, arranged as described and set forth, for the pnl-pos specified LUZERNE M. BOLLES,
