UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROLL-AND THOMPSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR OR CIGARETTE HOLDElR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,234, dated September 24, 1901. Application filed March 26, 1901- Serial No, 53,011. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROLLAND THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar or Cigarette Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an antinicotin cigar or cigarette holder; and it consists of a mouthpiece substantially the same in shape and size as the ordinary monthpiece, having within the bowl a tube slightly tapering at its rear end, so that it can be secured in the socket by frictional contact, said tube being of such length relative to the cavity of the mouthpiece that it projects slightly beyond the base of the cavity, where it is provided with transverse holes communicating with the bore of the tube, and beyond these holes is a disk or shield slightly concaved and of sufficient diameter to nearly close the cavity. Centrally from this disk is a solid projecting stem, which extends to a point near the end of the bowl, where it is provided with an annular crease, so that the same can readily be withdrawn, said stem serving as a holder for retaining the cigar within the cavity, while the concaved shield, being in proximity to the cut end of the cigar or cigarette, will receive the bulk of the nicotin thereon in the process of smoking, as will now be set forth in detail.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a mouthpiece equipped with the disk or shield for arresting the nicotin; Fig. 2, an exterior View with my improvement shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the tube, disk, or shield.
The mouthpiece 4 is made in the usual form and shape, out of any suitable material, and having the draft-duct 5 and the bowl or cavity 6 to receive the cigar or cigarette.
My invention comprises the tube 7, the rear portion of which is tapered so as to fit snugly in the enlarged bore of the mouthpiece, and
the forward end of this tube projects a short distance beyond the base or apex of the cavity 6, where lateral communication is made with the bore of the tube and the cavity 6 by means of one or more holes 8. Forward of these holes is a disk or shield 9, concaved on its front side, as shown at 10, this disk which terminates at a point near the end of l the mouthpiece, and an annular crease 13 is formed around the reduced end of this stem, so that the user can, by grasping the same with the thumb-nail and finger and slightly rocking it, readily loosen the tube and Withdraw it for cleansing purposes. This stem in practice is made small enough so that it will readily enter the end of anycigar, however tightly it may be wrapped, without splitting the wrapper, and when the cigar is placed in position the cut end thereof will be in close proximity to the concaved shield, so that when draft is applied the smoke will impinge against the shield and rob the smoke of the principal part of. the nicotin or deleterious elements therein, and as the smoke p'asses around the edge of the disk it enters the chamber 1l,where further condensation takes place, eliminating from the smoke the residue of the noxious gases before it finds its way into the aperture leading to the mouth.
One of the essential features of the invention is in the stem, which serves as a positive holder for the cigar, preventing it from being readily removed from the cavity, while at the same time the cigar need not be so firmly pressed into the cavity in the disk as to arrest the draft.
What I claim as new is A cigar-holder comprising a mouthpiece with a cavity therein,.a tube socketed within and projecting out into said cavity, said tube lateral holes behind theshield communicating with the duct of said tube, as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 19th day of March, A. D. 1901.
ROLLAND THOMPSON.
